"I had a wet basement that had been a problem in my home for years before purchase of my home. The placement of a Sump pump and floor drain tile appears to stop wet foundation walls and floor. The basement now has potential to be nice area of use and living for years ahead. The service is a expensive purchase for homeowner but it is a needed purchase for my home. The finishing job leaves the need with more work if your basement floor was rough from the years of water damage. They did stop any future water damage for my home and it is safe to spend more for more fine finishing. They completed what was contracted."

"The roofers finished in less than two days, they worked hard in the hot weather. They were happy all the time and did a great job. They cleaned up almost all of the mess. I found a handful of nails around that I picked up, but all in all it was fast, skilled, and I would hire Sears again."

"We contacted them for an estimate on our basement.  Initial phone call and connection went well, very professional, quick, and prompt.  Once the rep was at our home he went into a "pitch" vs. listening to what we said we already knew we wanted.  We even had a sketch.  Eventually we went to review the space, take measurements, etc.  We then started to pick out materials......he brought all the samples but then put together an evaluation based on square foot and overall price of our home and used that based on the square footage of our basement to determine a "fair" value........which was $100/sq ft.  That would have equated to over $100,000 basement.  Then he said how much "fairer" their price was at the quoted rate.  We were too far apart in our estimates which is fine with me, but at the end he said if I obtained a quote that was lower ~ to give him a call and they'd see what they can do.  At that point, I believe "no thanks".  Give me your best price up front.  The entire visit took almost 3 hours.  It was a big waste of time for all unfortunately as we had no intent to spend that much.

"They were very quick to respond to our issue - which was a leaking pipe in our basement. I tried a number of companies and they were the first who could respond. They were able to quickly identify the problem and when they felt the plumbing issue was more than they could handle, they let me know right away. Thus, we had to get a difficult company to take care of the plumbing issue but they came back to do quite a bit of drywall repair. They did a great job, were on time and did a nice job cleaning up when they were done. We were very happy with the job they did"

Basement Waterproofing questions, answered by experts

A plastic vapor barrier should completely cover your basement to prevent water from penetrating through the walls. This typically goes before installing insulation to prevent moisture from building up and becoming trapped on the inside of your insulation, where it can collect and lead to mold damage. Installing insulation after the vapor barrier allows for any moisture to exit the walls for better ventilation.

If you decide to fill the space around your home’s foundation with landscaping materials, it’s important to consider the aesthetic as well as technical factors like drainage and protection from pests and the elements. Materials such as gravel, rubber mulch, concrete, and brick masonry are all good options.

Generally, moisture barrier padding costs $0.75 to $1.50 per square foot, varying by brand and mix. That’s a lot more than standard padding, which runs $0.25 to $0.90 per square foot. The price difference between these two options might seem steep, but think of it as insurance against future carpet replacement costs and subfloor damage. If you have pets or kids, that extra investment in high-risk areas like your living room often pays off.

Yes, it is possible to over-dehumidify a house by removing too much moisture from the air. This can create an overly dry environment that negatively affects those with respiratory or skin issues, and may cause your skin, hair, and sinuses to feel dry. However, this is unlikely to happen with most modern dehumidifiers, as they are equipped with moisture sensors and adjustable settings. These features allow the unit to pause automatically when the desired humidity level is reached, preventing the air from becoming uncomfortably dry. In contrast, older or more basic dehumidifiers left running for too long could potentially over-dry the air. To avoid this, aim for a balance between removing excess moisture and maintaining a comfortable environment. You can often monitor your home's humidity levels using a modern thermostat for guidance.

The best type of basement ventilation system depends on your budget, the moisture in your basement’s air, and the types of windows you have down there. You should consider all of these factors when choosing a ventilation system. However, the most effective method for basement ventilation is an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) or a whole-house ventilation system, which preheats or precools incoming air from the outside while also managing water vapor.
