Transporting a fully-grown tree requires heavy equipment, typically specialized for the task. A tree spade is a truck-mounted tool that removes the tree from the ground in one location, transports it, and places it in a new hole in a new location. The ideal depth of a tree notch depends on the tree, but it should usually be between 20% and 25% of the tree’s depth. When the tree is leaning away from the direction it needs to be felled, you can cut deeper, closer to 30%.

For example, if the old tree roots and stump are currently exposed, drill holes in the tops of the roots and pour undiluted white vinegar into the holes to soak into the plant. Remember that vinegar can kill the surrounding grass and plants should it pour over the edge.
