"We met with Sean Walsh at the end of March and were immediately impressed with his professionalism and the thorough presentation of his company's products (top line Toro) and services.  Sean outlined his design for our watering needs and provided us with an easy to understand job proposal and contract.  We were also very pleased to find out that he would be on site at the beginning of the work to make sure that the workers understood any special issues or concerns that we had about the installation of our new irrigation system. We accepted the proposal and scheduled the job for the first available opening.  The workers (and Sean) showed up on time and the entire crew was also very professional and showed great concern for our extensively planted and landscaped property.  They also took great care when working inside our house while plumbing the new 1" water line.In addition, we had a concrete sidewalk project scheduled at the same time and Northwest Landscape worked together with that contractor make sure that the concrete work would not disturb the new irrigation system lines.  They finished the job right on time and explained the operation of the system fully so that we would be comfortable using is immediately. We only needed a couple of extra tweaks to get the system exactly as we wanted it, and they were out right away to make the needed adjustments. One month later we have retired our garden hoses and are enjoying the ease of having an irrigation system. And, we are extremely pleased that due to the extra care and time Northwest Landscape spent to replace any turf that was disturbed, all evidence of the extensive trenching, digging and water line pulling is completely gone and is now a lush green lawn and a perfectly watered landscape!

"They arrived in time. Adjusted the sprinkler heads, replaced one head, replaced a leaking pipe, replaced a electric point as one zone was not working. Informed me that sprinkler coverage of the lawns was adequate. In addition they advised on zone timing and also adjusted the timing. Service was excellent and the job was done well and at a reasonable price. I will certainly hire their services the next time."

"Jessica and her team completed our project in 1.5 days which is what she initially said it would be. They worked extremely hard morning until late afternoon. Clean up was terrific! You couldn’t even tell someone had worked on our driveway. We enjoyed the bees and butterflies visiting our new plants/shrubs all summer! Many thanks to Jessica and her team at Better Yards and Gardens!"

"Very easy and professional to work with from start to finish. My husband and I were nervous to work with another contractor, due to a previous very larger concrete project that had a few bumps towards the end of the project and we don't realize it would tear up most of our yard. The first call to Dan started with a small project grading and leveling estimate but through further discussions and Dan answering our questions; we decided to have them complete a larger landscaping project: replace a 72 feet rock wall with a boulder wall, frame a small flower garden with rocks, level and grade entire yard, over 4,500 sq feet, hydro seed, and place a few boulders throughout the yard . They initiated conversations with our neighbor, explaining and ensuring no damage to their yard would occur and if hey had any questions or concerns to please talk to them right way, they had none, and everything went smoothly. Dan and his brother pay attention to detail from start to finish and we greatly appreciated that. The grass is starting to grow and everything looks great. The price was well worth it."

Lawn Care questions, answered by experts

To reduce landscaping costs, you can implement several strategies at every stage. Consider doing the work yourself (DIY) to save on professional labor fees. You can also repurpose existing features and materials from other home projects. When purchasing new items, choose more inexpensive materials and opt for softscaping over hardscaping where possible. Another effective method is to buy young plants or plant from seed, which is more cost-effective than purchasing mature plants.

Mow before aeration. After you've aerated the lawn, you can fertilize, water, and overseed. But wait at least two weeks after aeration before you mow.

The first step is killing any current nutgrass plants, either through application of herbicides or sugar, by digging up the plants and rhizomes, or by using soil solarization. To discourage new nutgrass plants from forming, ensure proper landscape drainage and bring shade into areas of the lawn that are consistently damp.

You should not water your lawn every day, even in hot weather. For most lawns, watering one to three times per week is sufficient. It is best to water during a drought or when temperatures are high, but avoid watering in the middle of the day or if the temperature exceeds 95 degrees Fahrenheit. The extreme heat will cause the water to evaporate before the soil can fully absorb it. The best time to water is in the early morning at dawn or in the early evening (between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.) when the temperature is cooler.

Overwatering won’t just hurt your wallet with the water bill; it’ll impact the longevity of your lawn.

Too much water on your grass will deprive the root system of oxygen, stunting its growth and even killing it. Stunted root growth means a weak and disconnected root system. That means the lawn is weaker, making it more vulnerable to diseases and drought.
