A leach field can take several days or weeks to dry out, even with help from additives designed to improve bacterial activity and promote draining. Because of the risks to health and the potential for wastewater to run off into drinking water sources, it’s better to hire a pro to fix a saturated drain field than try to wait for it to dry out.

You shouldn’t use a French drain if you have nowhere for the water to go. For instance, maybe you don’t have a municipal drain nearby, and the only place the French drain could dump the excess water is a neighboring property or in a street without drainage. This just causes flooding problems for more people, so you’d want to consider a different draining solution for your property.

No, some window wells aren’t connected to drainage systems and instead are partially filled with gravel or crushed stone. In that case, water entering the well will drip down through the stone and disperse into the soil below. Window well drains might be required in areas with heavy rainfall or expansive soil—the lack of them could lead to foundation damage without a proper drainage system.

A leak under your foundation from a water supply line or sewage line is likely to lead to water pooling on certain areas of your property during rainfall, abnormally fast-growing or green grass in certain sections of your lawn, and differential settlement of your foundation, which can result in large foundation cracks, windows and doors failing to operate properly, a wavy or sloping roofline, or damages or irregularities in your interior walls, including cracks and bulging. If it’s a plumbing line embedded in your slab, you’ll also likely notice above-average water bills.

When installing your yard drainage system, consider the slope of your property. Drainage trenches must slope away from your yard by at least a 1% slope to drain properly. 

Also, consider how much water you need to drain. If your yard holds a lot of water in the winter, consider installing multiple drains to keep the area dry efficiently. Each municipality has different limits for how much water you can drain off your property. 

Before digging, always call 811. Even if you’re only digging a few inches, you could sever a gas or sewage line. A cut line is a serious safety hazard.
