We offer 24 hour emergency service and accept Visa and Mastercard. Our office is conveniently located at 1303 N Broadway, open M-F 8:30 - 5:30 and Sat 9-1. "Wish I could rate this a 0/5. Literally could not recommend this place LESS. Would like to start out by saying that the associate Chad who physically came out to help us, was very kind and helpful. Our car was stranded in a fast food restaurant parking lot overnight after the key broke off the fob in the ignition and we were unable to reprogram a new fob. Called Paul’s Lock & Key Shop for advice/availability as my sick grandfather was stuck at the hotel without his medications and needed to return home as soon as possible. Owner Jim answered the phone and immediately began to speak with hostility towards us, saying “are you going to shut up so I can talk?” and “I’m trying to do you a favor and if you don’t stop talking I’m not helping you” as my mom was trying to relay information from him to me so I could follow his instruction. He also cussed at us, saying “well maybe I should ******* talk to her then!” When my mom was explaining the situation to him. It made an already incredibly stressful day 1000x worse, and I never expected this kind of customer service in Rochester. Especially where 90% of visitors are likely having the worst day of their life and could be met with a small amount of kindness. You never know what someone is going through. Will not be using services again and certainly will not be recommending to others/will be warning those looking for appropriate service to look elsewhere. Very disappointing."

A smart lock is a variation of a traditional lock, and since it uses similar locking mechanisms, it’s technically not any safer. The difference is that a smart lock requires a login instead of a physical key. Some smart locks have added safety features, like shutting down after too many attempts with the wrong code. Some smart locks are considered harder to pick than traditional locks, which can further deter intruders.

It’s possible, but depends on the design of your lock. Some door locks that lack a keyhole do boast a small hole on the exterior handle or knob. This hole’s primary function is to allow water to drain out of the lock, in addition to giving homeowners an easy spot to insert lubrication. However, you can typically use a paperclip in this pinhole to unlock the door by manipulating the mechanism inside. 

Lubricating a door lock is an important part of door lock maintenance. It involves taking the lubricant of your choice (it’s best to use whatever the lock’s manufacturer suggests) and spraying it directly into the keyway. Push and pull your key in and out of the lock to make sure it’s all the way in. 

If you don’t have your original key, the easiest way to obtain a copy is to call a locksmith. For house keys, your locksmith has several options for configuring a new key: 

  • They can input a lock’s identification code into a database to obtain key-cutting instructions.

  • They could analyze the lock cylinder to determine how to cut a new key.

  • They can create an impression of the lock cylinder from which to cut a new key. 

The cost to rekey locks on your home is $40 to $100 plus $15 to $40 per lock. Rekeying means you can keep your existing locks but simply change the key. You’ll still need a pro to cut a new key and rekey the lock, but no new hardware is required. Rekeying is a good option if:

  • You need a quick way to upgrade your current locks

  • You have a quality lock that works well

  • You recently moved in and want to ensure you’re the only one with access

  • You lost a key
