"Derek is a real pro! He installed a generator plug on the exterior of my house and consulted with me on the best placement for a clean install. He wired up a hot tub about a year ago that he did a great job on too. Definitely would recommend him for any electrical projects you have."

"The call went exceptionally well. Terry was impressive in both his extensive knowledge of the options available for replacement across various price points and the features, advantages, and benefits of representative units. He kept my needs in mind throughout his call and I felt that I was choosing what was best for my situation rather than being sold a unit he favored. Terry is not only knowledgeable but courteous, respectful, customer-service oriented, and professional in all aspects of his service call and his demeanor in interacting with me. He worked quickly despite having to replumb the pipe configuration created for the previous installation and a different physically sized disposal unit being replaced. The new unit is working with no leaks or concerning noise that typically indicate excessive vibration or incorrect installation. I placed a service request on Angie’s list and McQuillan Brothers was the first vendor to respond, demonstrating to me that this company is on top of the marketing of its business. If I needed further proof of this company’s competence, it occurred when their technician/licensed plumber, Terry, showed up at my door. I’m hopeful that I won’t need plumbing help again anytime soon, but if I do, I’ll be calling McQuillan Brothers and specifically requesting Terry to help me out once more."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

While the rating will tell you how many watts the refrigerator needs at the peak of its cycle, it requires additional wattage to start. At the bare minimum, you’ll need a 1,500-watt generator to get the fridge up and running after a blackout. A 2,000-watt generator should be sufficient for most home refrigerators.

Yes, in most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home models. Because these installations involve significant alterations to your home's electrical system and produce exhaust fumes, local governments often require a permit or inspection for safety purposes. A generator permit typically costs between $50 and $250, depending on your location. Your electrician or certified installer can usually handle the permitting process for you, but you will be responsible for the cost. It's a good practice to confirm with your installer that they will pull all necessary permits before work begins.

To reduce AC startup power for a whole-house generator, install a soft start kit or hard start capacitor, which lowers the initial surge by gradually ramping up the compressor. Using a smart load manager can also help by staggering startup loads, preventing a system overload and future costly repairs.

Costs depend on generator type, labor, and additional wiring or transfer switch requirements.

Whole-house generators need to be installed on level ground several feet away from walls and other objects. Because they tap into the electrical system directly, they usually need to be close to your home electrical panel for a transfer switch installation. It also helps with installation if they are near to a gas line or propane tank installation.
