"I am so glad I found Northern Earthworks to build my deck. Caden and his crew were professional and courteous and delivered a quality product on schedule. I have been known to be particular, and Caden listened to what I had to say and came up with a wonderful solution which resulted in an end result that was incredible. They left the job site neat and clean and helped me store the left- over material inside. I highly recommend them and definitely will be calling them to bid on my next project."

Customers say: Quick response

"Rick Sievers, General Contractor and Owner of Bay Ridge Development Inc., provided everything he promised in his bid with skill, flexibility, organization and constant communication. As is probably true with any remodel, we requested changes at various intervals throughout and Rick handled those requests with grace and showed his ability to be flexible. He is extremely skilled and always strove for perfection in his own performance as well as the performance of the specialty services he hired. Rick performed most of the work himself, so he was onsite the majority of the time, and when a specialty service was required, he hired people who worked to his high standards. Rick's organization and communication skills are wonderful and were very much appreciated from day one. There were absolutely no surprises due to Rick's ability to communicate throughout our remodel. Rick was a pleasure to interact with, from beginning to end, and we won't hesitate to request his services in the future. We absolutely love the end result! "I was very impressed with Sentri Homes - their customer service was excellent. They sent a subcontractor to install some vinyl laminate in my bathroom and he ended up getting glue all over the carpet in our bedroom. The sub ended up ghosting both me and Sentri, leaving me stuck with a ruined carpet. Sentri stuck with me for over a month to get the carpet replaced with the identical original and to get the vinyl job 100% completed. The carpet was a Home Depot exclusive and Sentri handled everything with them. I will be using Sentri for a much bigger renovation I have coming up soon, because I know that they will make sure everything gets done right no matter what problems come up. The vinyl looks great too."

"I could not be more pleased with my home remodel and construction of a new storage shed performed by Bob Thornton. The remodeled area matches perfectly with my existing home. No one would ever know that the remodeled living space was not part of the original home. The new storage shed aligns seamlessly with the architecture of my existing home, including roof pitch, vinyl siding, shingles, windows and door. Bob has in-depth knowledge of all aspects of construction, from foundation to finish-carpentry and all steps in between, including plumbing, electrical, mechanical, flooring and drywall. I threw a lot of curve balls at Bob during the construction, and he handled them all in a kind and professional manner. He worked with me throughout the building process to ensure I would be pleased with the final results. The work was performed promptly and within budget. What stands out the most is Bobs attention to detail, quality craftsmanship and use of superior materials. Bob exceeded my expectations and made the entire process fun. I was almost sad when the work was completed, as it was such a pleasure working with Bob and his crew. I would not think of hiring anyone else for any future projects. I highly recommend Bob Thorton for any job, big or small."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can finance new construction, though the process often requires a different type of loan than one for an existing property. There are several financing options available:

  • Construction-to-Permanent Loan: This is a common option where a single loan covers the building costs and then converts into a traditional mortgage once construction is complete and you move in.

  • Construction Loan (Stand-Alone): This type of loan provides funding only for the duration of the construction project. Once the house is built, you will need to pay the loan in full, typically by securing a separate, standard mortgage.

  • Builder Financing: Some custom homebuilders offer their own financing options, which may only require a down payment to begin the building process.

  • Bridge Loan: This can be a useful short-term loan to fund your new construction while you are in the process of selling your old home.

  • Home Equity Options: If you are building a second home, you might be able to use a home equity line of credit (HELOC) or a cash-out refinance on your current property.

It's also important to be aware that some lenders may have restrictions on financing for DIY house builds, so be sure to verify that you can secure financing before starting your project.

The most significant expense when building a barndominium is constructing the metal shell, which includes the roof, doors, and windows. Additional exterior components impacting the overall cost include metal siding and the concrete foundation.

Construction typically takes 3-6 months, including site preparation and assembly.

Green homes are often more expensive to build, averaging around $200 per square foot compared to the $150 per square foot you’d spend to build a standard home. However, green homes can save you money on your utility bills by consuming less energy or creating energy using solar panels or wind turbines on-site. They’re more expensive to build, but they often end up costing less in the long run.

The average cost to renovate or remodel a home is $52,300, with most projects ranging from $19,500 to over $88,400. However, costs can vary significantly, from as low as $3,000 for a small project to $170,000 or more for a complete home remodel.

Several factors influence the total price, including:

  • Project Scope and Size: The extent of the renovations, whether it's a single room or the entire house.

  • Location: Geographic location affects labor and material costs.

  • Materials: The quality of materials chosen.

  • Room Type: Kitchen remodels ($14,500 - $70,000+) are generally more expensive than bedroom remodels ($1,500 - $5,500).

  • Other Factors: The time of year, complexity of the work, and any additions or expansions.

On a per-square-foot basis, you can expect to pay between $15 and $60 for standard projects and up to $150 for luxury renovations.

Examples of specific project costs include:

  • Basement remodel: ~$20,200

  • Garage remodel: ~$27,900

  • Loft conversion: ~$20,200

  • Disability accommodation remodel: ~$4,300

  • Major home repairs: ~$11,700

If you are financing the project, note that some loan programs, like the FHA 203(k), may require a minimum project cost (e.g., $5,000) and will necessitate a home appraisal and professional cost estimates. Using a home renovation cost estimator can also help you budget for your project.
