"All I needed was half my basement repaired from water damage due to a broken pipe. They would not come out to even quote the job unless they were going to rebuild the entire basement. At least they didn't waste my time."

"Three stars because the work is very nice, but I am disappointed in the overall experience. Larry came to quote cleaning and sealing our deck and confidently told me it would require 6-7 gallons of stain. He told me to get a Behr semi-transparent stain - no mention of having it tinted. (I've never owned a deck; it did not occur to me that it needed to be tinted.) It would have been helpful to know this, even if it seems obvious to other people. He arrived right on time to begin work, but when he realized the stain wasn't tinted, I had to take it back to the store and have it tinted. (His exact instructions: Take it back and have it tinted, OR return it and buy one that is already tinted.) I get home with my 7 gallons of tinted stain, and then it doesn't work in his sprayer, and I feel a little bit like he is blaming the brand - which he told me to choose. Finally the work is done...and he only needed HALF of the stain. So I am stuck with about $150 worth of stain that I don't need. He told me "it may last a year in the basement" and then when he saw how not happy I was, he said it would "definitely last a year" and can be used for touch-up later. Then he told me that's why he always tells people to get already tinted stain, so they can return the leftovers. Well - not really, otherwise I would have done that and would be returning my leftovers today. So, good work, timely arrival, and I appreciated that he came out to do the estimate in the evening. That was very convenient. But the overall experience has bummed me out and taken some of the pleasure away from my beautifully stained deck. I was hoping this could be the start of an ongoing relationship, as we have a lot of projects and he does almost everything, but I don't think I would hire him again."

"Best decision I have EVER made hands down was choosing SHB. I called multiple companies prior and never felt confident in going through with my remodel until I met Jerrod. He was honest, professional, friendly and consistent, along with his whole team. I know if I need anything done in the future I will call him first without hesitation."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Whether it’s more affordable to gut a house than build a new one depends on the markets where you'd be buying and selling. However, it’s usually less expensive to renovate a home than to build new construction.

Most homeowners pay between $100,000 and $200,000 for demolition and remodeling costs, whereas the average cost to build a new home is between $139,000 and $531,300.

Installing a bathroom in a basement isn’t a project for most homeowners. Many parts—plumbing, electricity, and carpentry—go into this project, each requiring expert-level knowledge and tools. One miscalculation can lead to very expensive repairs. Plus, some homeowner’s insurance might not pay for damages caused by a homeowner DIYing this project. You can protect yourself by allowing the pros to complete this job for you.

Permits may be required for major repairs, structural work, or electrical and plumbing restoration after a flood. Check with your local building department to determine permit requirements and associated fees for your flooded basement cleanup project. Obtaining the correct permits helps ensure work is done safely and up to code.

Efficient appliance positioning, optimizing existing plumbing, and sourcing energy-efficient materials reduce financial impact and increase sustainability.

Building up by adding square footage to the top of your home is often less expensive than adding a basement, but it depends on the specifics of your house, your property, and supply costs. Because building a basement requires excavation, it can be a more expensive option than building up.
