"All I needed was half my basement repaired from water damage due to a broken pipe. They would not come out to even quote the job unless they were going to rebuild the entire basement. At least they didn't waste my time."

"Larry Barr is an extremely professional and trustworthy contractor. My daughter and I hired Done Rite to finish basement ceiling tiles and we received expert advice and service. We also had 3 rooms painted and are more than pleased. I could not ask for a more considerate and courteous work crew. Larry had no problem taking care of all of the other small jobs we added on. Superior Job Well Done!"

"Jerrod Thomason, the owner of Superior Home Building, did a complete remodel of our house including a new addition. He did the work while we spent the winter in FL. I contacted him based on the outstanding reviews on Angie's list. We did not meet him until the job was well under way. Everything was done by phone, email, and FaceTime. We couldn't have been more pleased with the result. I would recommend Jerod for any job. He was outstanding!! Our job included: new roof, new siding, new gutters & down spouts, replace all windows, new flooring, new lighting and electrical, new plumbing, seal walls and waterproof basement, paint every room and ceiling in the house. Also a complete remodel of the kitchen, bathroom, utility room, closets, and an addition which included a large new bathroom, walk-in closet and storage area. Use Superior Home Building you won't regret it!!"

"This was our 2nd project with Craig after having our basement refinished. Our new crown moldings have lightening above that reflects onto the ceiling. It makes the rooms look more elegant. The kitchen had ugly multi colored back splash we inherited when we purchased the house. Now, the marble back splash reflects the quality of our home in general. All craftmenship work was done at a fair price and until we were fully satisfied.Craig's workers are the best from professionalism, skill to timeliness from start to finish. We are now finalizing plans on a screened porch with a stamped concrete floor that will blend in with the home and look like it's always been there. I have complete confidence in knowing they finish our jobs completely before moving on to another one."

"Jeff and team recently painted and performed numerous other home improvement updates on our 1981 ~2400 sq ft house. The paint job is very nice - all walls and trim, house, garage and basement. It was great that they are also able to do painting-related updates ranging from new electrical outlets, closet maid installs, new door hardware, etc. at the same time, and that help show off the freshly painted and updated house. They were also willing to come out and do some smaller touch-up jobs after all our furniture and carpet was installed. The JAM team had done some painting in our old house and when we moved and first needed a basically whole house paint job, we got two painting quotes and decided to go with JAM as the two quotes were very similar and we had enjoyed working with Jeff and team in the past. Thanks team - house looks great!!"

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Although homeowners often use the terms basement remodeling and basement finishing interchangeably, they are quite different terms.

Finishing a basement is the process of taking a basement space that is not habitable and adding elements to make it usable. This includes adding plumbing, flooring, and insulation.

Remodeling a basement means taking an already existing finished basement and changing it, often by adding or removing walls, adding plumbing, or changing the existing flooring.

Walkout basements are not generally included in a home’s square footage, although they may be if they meet certain conditions that depend on local regulations. A finished walkout basement used as a living space may be counted toward square footage in some locations as long as all codes for livable space are met.

It is common for a contractor to ask for a down payment before starting a project, especially for jobs that require purchasing materials and equipment or hiring a crew. The deposit amount can range from 10% to 50% of the total job cost. While a request for up to 50% is not unusual, a contractor should not ask for more than that, and you should never pay for a project in full before the work has begun. To protect yourself, always discuss payment terms before starting and have a written contract that outlines the project timeline and expectations. Additionally, be sure to hire reputable contractors and check their licensing and insurance before the project begins.

When considering finishing your basement, take into account a few pros and cons:

Pros

  • Can increase the value of your home

  • Separate space from the rest of the house

  • Customize and personalize the basement to suit your needs and style

  • Increase the amount of living space in your home

Cons

  • May not regain enough value to cover the cost of finishing

  • Lack of natural light if it’s below ground level

  • Moisture or flooding can cause costly damage

  • Installing plumbing and electrical can be messy and costly

For most basement remodels, you’ll want to hire a general contractor. This is for a number of reasons, but the main two are that general contractors have dedicated teams they are comfortable with, and hiring one means you only have to deal with one pro. You may also get a better project quote since they can lump all their work and subcontracting into a single quote.
