"We chose Dennison Exterior Solutions & Gutter Toppers to replace our 26 year old roof. One of the main reasons that we chose Dennison is that they were one of the few companies that advertised a complete solution, including new roof, gutters, downspouts and Gutter Toppers. All communications with Scott Dennison and Sam, the Installation Manager, were very fast and extremely thorough. A very comprehensive inspection was initially completed, including accessing the attic. Numerous photos were taken both in the attic and of the outside of the house. Additionally, a drone was used to capture a detailed overview of what the project would include. A considerable amount of time was spent explaining proper ventilation and the changes needed to have our project be in compliance for warranty certification. A detailed explanation for all stages of the project was provided along with the quote and before the work started. They were able to schedule the project much faster than expected, and complete all parts of the project in only a week, using the same hard working three man crew. All the work was completed in an exceptional manner, including the necessary clean up after various stages of the project. The results look great and will provide us with an installation that will last long into the future. We highly recommend this company for any project that falls within their extensive list of capabilities."

"Keith and his two employees did some demolition work in the basement of my house. They worked very hard for almost four hours. It was a big, dirty job and they did a very good job. I would hire them again if I had more demo work to do."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Skylights might sometimes increase your homeowners insurance premium, but the increase is usually minimal. Some home insurance companies won’t adjust your premium with the addition of a skylight, so you can contact your insurer or your professional skylight installer to ask about any expected changes. It’s crucial to have an expert install the skylight, as insurance companies may not insure your roof or cover water damage that results from a non-professional skylight installation.

Skylights are the most likely windows to leak if installed improperly, so there are a few questions you should ask any skylight installer before you hire them:

  • Do you specialize in skylight installation or only windows in general?

  • Do you offer any kind of warranty for the installation?

  • What recourse do I have if the skylight leaks shortly after installation?

  • Do you have references I can speak with?

  • How long have you been in business?

  • Are you licensed and insured?

Professionals repair or seal a skylight by inspecting for damages, resealing any gaps with appropriate weatherproofing materials, replacing cracked glass or seals, and ensuring the frame is tightly fitted to prevent future leaks and ensure proper drainage.

Whether you need a permit to install a skylight depends on the scope of the project and local regulations. Generally, permits are required if the installation involves altering the structural components of your home, such as moving roof rafters. In some municipalities, a permit might also be necessary if the skylight protrudes above the highest point of your existing roof. However, if no structural changes are made, a permit may not be needed. The cost for a skylight installation permit is typically under $100. A convenient time to add a skylight is during a roof replacement, as your contractor can incorporate the new opening into the design.

Yes, you can cover up a skylight if you no longer wish to have it in your space. There are a few options for covering up a skylight. One option is to install a skylight cover or shade that can be easily opened or closed as needed, allowing you to control the amount of light entering the room. Another option is to cover the skylight with a solid material, such as plywood or drywall, effectively sealing it off. However, when covering a skylight, it's essential to ensure proper insulation and waterproofing to prevent any issues in the future.
