If you have an uneven door, the best way to level it or make it plumb is to use shims between the frame of the prehung door and the wall opening around it. Rough wall openings for doors usually leave substantial space for shimming so that you can make these adjustments. Start by shimming the hinge side of the door to center the prehung door, and then shim the lock side. Once it’s centered, hammer in the shims and continue checking that it’s plumb to get it to sit snugly in the wall opening and perfectly plumb and level.

First, check to make sure the doorstop isn’t blocking the door. To close the door, slide the doorstop as close to the hinge side of the rod as possible. If that doesn’t work, try moving the door bracket closer to the other side. Some brackets will have extra holes for this purpose, meaning you can slide the bracket over and reattach it without drilling new holes into the door. If you’re still having trouble, you may want to consult a local storm door installer.

You can convert a pre-hung door into a Dutch door, but it’s more of a pain. Pre-hung doors are already set in the frame with the hinges and everything aligned, so once you cut the slab in half, you’ll likely need to adjust the hinge placement and maybe even mess with the frame itself. It’s doable, but expect some trial and error because it’s not a straight-swap situation.

Exposure to moisture leads to door jamb rot. Water softens the wood, leaving it susceptible to damage from even slight bumps. Over time, the excess moisture allows mold, mildew, and fungus to grow. These organisms feed on the wood, leaving behind a soft, splintering door jamb. The breakdown will continue if the wood isn’t repaired or replaced. Outdoor wood jambs are the most prone to rotting, but bathrooms and doorways in a humid climate can sustain this damage.

WD-40 can help with a stiff or squeaky hinge, but it’s a short-term rather than a long-term solution. It works by breaking down rust and grime, but it evaporates quickly and won’t keep the hinge lubricated for long. After using it to free up the movement, wipe the hinge clean and follow up with a true lubricant like silicone spray or white lithium grease.
