The number of coats you need to apply when whitewashing a surface depends on how opaque you want the final product to be. You can technically use wall paint on a ceiling, but it’s not ideal. Wall paint is thinner and more prone to dripping, which makes it harder—and messier—to apply overhead. Any significant level of sheen can highlight ceiling imperfections and create glare from lighting. Flat ceiling paint is the better choice for a smooth, even finish that hides flaws.
