"Drew is a great guy with a wide range of skills. He did some electrical work on outdoor plugins, put steel siding on an old shed, and did tuckpointing and surface sealing on a huge old barn built in the 40s, built a new livestock door for the barn, and installed a storm door. We've got plans for LVT flooring and shed roofing for 2026. Hire him. You won't be disappointed. In general, natural gas fireplaces release only half to two-thirds as much CO2 per unit of heat (BTU) as burning wood. Plus, gas fireplaces emit fewer harmful particles and air pollutants. They can also be about three times as efficient as wood in terms of heating your home, resulting in a much higher level of their energy converting into heat.

Handbuilt masonry fireplaces are likely what comes to mind when we think about curling up by the fire at the end of the day. But bricks in the firebox and chimney tend to be heavy, which is not ideal for homes with weak or damaged foundations.

Prefabricated fireboxes come with a full flue and chimney system, significantly reducing the price and installation time. However, if you need to replace the panels down the line, you are locked into the same model or something very similar.

In many cases, it is worth repairing an old fireplace. You can repair any portion of the fireplace, and even extensive repairs will usually cost less than a full replacement. Most fireplace repairs cost around $600 and top out around $2,500. Replacing your fireplace will cost around $2,500 and reach as high as $4,000. Not only will fireplace repair save you money in most cases, but the process is also much less invasive and time-consuming, so you’ll only have to set aside one day to be home for the work rather than multiple days.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says that chimneys and their associated elements like fireplaces, vents, or stoves should be cleaned at least once a year before the start of seasonal use. According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America, a chimney should be cleaned when there is 1/8 inch of soot buildup. If there’s more than that, creosote—a flammable byproduct of burning wood—can form and increase the risk of a chimney fire.
