"Larry was courteous, personable, very knowledgeable and professional. He was prompt and thorough. He power washed and stained all 3 of our decks at our cottage, gave us good advice on selecting products used and how to maintain afterward. We highly recommend CLS Painting."

"We had John from RFL Painting repaint our barn. The old paint was peeling and faded. His estimate was excellent and he started working right away. The old paint was power washed and scraped. The new paint was sprayed and back-rolled. The trim was a contrasting color and the lines between the red walls and white trim were crisp and straight. Our barn now looks better than when it was new!"

"Adam's painting coated my ceilings, including the cathedral ceiling, and stairways. They look brand new. The crew carefully moved everything. Covered what could not be moved. Even vacuumed before they put all the furniture back. Chris is very easy to work with. He even made recommendations to save me money. The crew is very pleasant, really hard working. And all for a good price. I don't know what else you could ask for."

"The Wash Doctor did an amazing job washing our home! After not properly maintaining our home, decks and sidewalks, for a few years (very embarrassing) and seeing signs of mold (even more embarrassing), I called The Wash Doctor and canâ t say enough positive things. VERY professional, EXCELLENT work and at a great price. Highly recommend their services. Donâ t let your home not get the care and service that the Dr. can give! Your neighbors will appreciate it."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Applying too much sealer to a deck might seem like extra protection, but it can cause more harm than good. Wood is a porous material with a limited capacity to absorb liquids. When you go overboard with sealer, the excess can't soak in and instead forms a film on the surface. This leftover layer is prone to peeling, cracking, and trapping moisture, ultimately defeating the purpose of sealing in the first place.

Yes, it's a good idea to sand the wall with fine-grit sandpaper after spackling, especially if you plan on painting. You can do this by hand or using a sander, but the idea is to ensure the spackle is flush with the wall. Sanding will give your wall a smooth, uniform finish and help your paint and wallpaper stay put.

Limewash and whitewash do not harm surfaces if you apply them correctly. Use on non-suitable surfaces can cause issues. For instance, applying limewash or whitewash to surfaces with existing sealants or incompatible materials may lead to poor adhesion or flaking. Also, harsh cleaning agents on limewashed or whitewashed surfaces can damage the finish. Proper preparation, application, and maintenance ensure that limewash and whitewash do not harm surfaces.

Your tool of choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. Many DIYers prefer applying stain with a lint-free rag, but others stick with a paint brush or a roller. Wipe the stain and work it into the wood, working with and against the grain. If you’re applying multiple coats, allow the stain to dry for around four hours between coats.

The longevity of paint on wood depends on factors like the quality of the paint, surface preparation, exposure to elements, and maintenance. Exterior paint on wood surfaces can last 5 to 15 years or more with proper care and maintenance. Interior paint tends to have a longer life span, often 10 years or more. Regular cleaning, touch-ups, and addressing any issues like peeling or cracking can extend the life of the paint.
