"Don is a real gentleman. He is old school and a class act! His crew is very professional and their attention to detail is bar none, the best I have seen in many decades! Don reviewed what needed to be done in very specific terms and executed the project exactly as he described it. Other aspects of his scope of work was wood repair, deck restoration, chimney restoration and flashing repairs, interior painting and water damage restoration. All were executed flawlessly! I highly recommend Don and have already booked him to do more work on my older cottage on Torch Lake. Thank you Don!"

"Gabe and his team showed up on time they worked diligently through the course of a wheat painting the interior of my house. The job went well and it looks excellent. They care about the work that they do and are very particular and produce high quality. Great experience compared when I get to painting the basement of the house I will hire them again. Kudos to Gabe"

"Ashley restained our deck and painted the railings and spindles. She also repainted our front door and trim. She goes above and beyond with all of her work. She fixed and filled all the holes and gaps in our deck and weatherproofed it as well. She is knowledgeable and researches products and how to best use them. Ashley has excellent communication. She keeps you updated on the progress of your project every step of the way. She delivers as expected and the quality of her work is outstanding. This is the second project Ashley has worked on in my home and I highly recommend using her. I will definitely call her again in the future."

"We asked Dave for two projects 1) prepare and restrain a large deck and 2) remove, replace and paint miscellaneous wood trim on the exterior of the house. Dave contacted us within minutes of our request, arrived in the late afternoon to give us an estimate and began within a week or so. He did what he said he would and in a timely manner. He kept us informed each step of the way. We were so happy with his work we asked him to do another interior project."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

In most cases, sanding an old deck before staining it is necessary to achieve a decent finish. If your old deck has a relatively new stain finish on it and you're only doing touch-ups, you can generally skip the sanding part. However, if your goal is to make the deck look and function better, sanding first is a must.

It is definitely worth sanding a deck to ensure the wood absorbs new stain. Sanding a deck removes the outer layers of aging wood, allowing the stain to penetrate. It also gives a fresh look to the entire surface as part of the deck refinishing process. Without sanding, your stain or sealant is less likely to absorb into the wood. While sanding a deck is a time-intensive project, the rewards are noticeable and long-lasting.

Deciding whether to stain or paint a pool deck depends on your budget, desired look, and the deck's material. Both options can work. Paint offers a wider variety of color options, provides excellent water resistance, and can last longer. However, it requires a primer and can eventually fade or peel. Stain is often cheaper, easier to apply, and penetrates the wood for a more natural look and longer-lasting finish. It also has great water resistance. The downsides are fewer color options and the need for a sealant. The choice can also depend on the deck material; for example, staining may be a better option for concrete as it bonds well and lasts longer than paint.

Painted decks typically require a new coat about once every ten years. In between new coats, it's best to maintain your deck by regularly removing debris, washing it down with non-abrasive cleaners, and staying ahead of structural issues, such as loose boards and rotting wood. In some cases, painting a small section of your deck affected by damage or the sun can lower your costs and workload.

Whether you can paint over your existing paint depends on what’s on there. Most of the time, you’ll want to sand down or scrape off the paint that’s currently coating your surface. Epoxy paint, for example, won’t let new paint stick to the surface. Latex paint is more forgiving and will accept a new coat, but a primer is recommended if you’re switching colors.
