Complete remodeling and construction services from design to build. Specializing in Kitchen, Bath, Basement, and Custom Cabinetry and Finish Carpentry.

"I had a decorative chimney wall which the prior owners had not securely fastened to the wall behind. Jim came and gave me a reasonable quote for demolition, haul-away and construction of a properly secured, modern stacked stone chimney wall. Jim and his team arrived on time and took extreme care with the belongings in the room - moving them to a safe distance or completely out of the room. He also took GREAT care to protect the wooden floor in the room - one dropped brick in demolition could easily mar the floor, but Jim ensured that the floor would be protected. In terms of the actual work, the work was performed as promised, with quality, and ahead of schedule. Jim and his team went above and beyond - both from a customer service perspective, and even performing a few items I would not have expected a "regular" company would have taken care of. I would highly recommend Jim and W.J. Scott Renovations and would gladly hire them again myself."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

If your budget can stretch to it, opting for porcelain tile over ceramic tile makes sense if you need something hard-wearing for a busy, moisture-retaining space. However, the cost of installing ceramic tiles is less expensive. They’re a little softer and easier to work with, making them a good choice for small, decorative DIY projects.

Yes, provided you aren’t installing drywall over it. But you can skim coat it, apply new tile right on top, paint it, or stencil it. For more budget- and DIY-friendly options, you can install beadboard or apply decals. Just make sure that the current tiles are in good condition and prepped well for the paint or adhesive to stick.

Popular options include ceramic, porcelain, stone, and glass tiles, chosen based on the area (bathroom, kitchen) and desired aesthetic.

The grout shade you choose comes down to personal taste and preference. A darker grout will give you a more dramatic and noticeable contrast with the tile around it; however, lighter grout helps create a more uniform look when blending the colors together. Additionally, a darker grout combined with a patterned tile could be overwhelming to the eye, while lighter grout makes the pattern stand out as the main focus.

Grout and caulk are commonly used together, especially in bathrooms. Grout goes between the tiles and keeps them sturdy and in place on the walls or floor. Caulk goes in corners or where two different materials meet (like where the bathtub meets the tile) to create a waterproof seal. However, they are not interchangeable—you shouldn't use caulk to adhere tile and shouldn’t use mortar if you need a waterproof seal.
