Small jobs welcome

"Brendan of Oasis did an excellent job on making my five year-old deck look brand new. He power washed and sealed it as well as my paver patio. He was prompt and efficient with both his quote and his work each day. He and his partner were very respectful of my property and carefully removed and replaced each piece of furniture. They were truly professional in their task. I would definitely work with them again. In fact, I have a job in mind for them to do next."

"When I contacted Mr Brock, I told him I had a trex deck flooring and 4 step steps that I wanted power washed. I thought the $300 was high, but being late in the season, I accepted. On the day of service, the service man rang my bell to inquire on the service to be performed, as he was about to power wash the entire deck - railings, spindles, and even the privacy panels which are wood stained. Thanks to a heads up employee, which did an excellent job to power wash only the trex flooring and steps but not the stained wood. Quality work, but not so on communications with Mr Brock."

"Things went very well. Chase came out on short notice, he was pleasant and courteous. He went right to work and cleared our gutters, including clean up of the debris. Before ending he went above and beyond by offering to test each downspout for clearance. With great pricing compared to others and excellent service I would highly recommend him for your yearly gutter cleaning/maintenance. Thanks chase!"

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

The best way to sand a deck is by cleaning it, sanding the boards and stairs with 60- or 80-grit sandpaper, and sanding the railings and posts with 80-grit sandpaper. You should sand in the direction of the wood grain to avoid damaging the timber. When sanding your deck, use medium pressure and aim for an even sand. Pressing too hard with a sander can damage decks, as most are softwoods.

Both aluminum and composite decking materials are environmentally friendly, with aluminum decking coming in as the most eco-friendly option.

Though composite decking helps remove plastics from landfills, recycles wood, and lasts longer than traditional wood decks, it’s not recyclable and only lasts for 25 to 30 years on average. Aluminum can last well over 30 years and is almost always recyclable.

The proper height for a stair riser or deck step is between four and seven inches, with seven inches often considered the most comfortable. Building your stairs to this height ensures a strain-free step position and minimizes the risk of trip and fall injuries. For optimal safety and comfort, especially on deck stairs, a rise of around seven inches should be paired with a tread depth (or run) of at least 10 to 12 inches. While it is possible to design stairs with risers up to 12 inches, this height can be challenging for children, pets, or individuals with mobility issues. Always check with your local building codes, as they may mandate specific dimensions that differ from these general recommendations.

The best direction for a gate to swing depends on its location and purpose, but swinging inward is the general rule. An inward swing is often considered safer, prevents the gate from opening into public spaces like a sidewalk, and may be required by local building codes.

There are exceptions and specific considerations. If your property is on a slope, an inward swing might not be possible. For a deck gate, it's safest to have it swing away from any steps. In a backyard, the direction can be a matter of preference, though an inward swing can be helpful when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

Regardless of direction, ensure the gate can open fully without hitting any objects or blocking spaces. While an inward swing is standard, a gate that can swing both in and out offers the most flexibility if your setup allows for it.

The average cost to professionally clean or pressure wash a deck is around $150, with prices typically ranging from $100 to $600. Several factors influence the final price, including the deck's size, material, condition, and how long it has been since its last cleaning. For a smaller deck of about 300 square feet, you might pay around $100. For a larger deck of 1,000 square feet or more, the cost could be closer to $300 to $400. Decks that are very dirty or haven't been cleaned in years may require more time and special detergents, which will increase the price. The deck's material also plays a role. Wood decks often cost more to clean because they require a gentle power washing technique to avoid damage. Composite decks are typically less expensive to clean, and cleaning a metal deck may cost around $100.
