My name is Kenneth and I have been in the landscaping profession for over six years. I specialize in hedging, tree trimming, weed removal, gardening, small yard drainage jobs, and laying mulch among other things. I typically charge much less than most companies and I am a one man crew. (Its just me) If you provide the equipment(Tools and/or any other equipment needed for the job) then I can do the work.

"A good friend of mine referred me to M.C. Outdoor Services because I needed some work done on my landscape. I was very impressed to see how it turned out. It was a fair price to make my yard look good again. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for some work to be done on their yard."

Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

The best time to lay mulch depends on the type of mulch and the reason for installing it:

  • Summer: Adding extra mulch helps soil retain moisture and keeps weeds at bay, allowing plants to thrive.

  • Fall: Adding mulch helps control weeds and keeps soil and roots warm during the cooler months. Aim to add a layer of mulch 2 to 4 inches deep.

  • Winter: Mulch around perennial plants to help keep them insulated.

  • Spring: Wait until the ground has thawed. Depending on the thickness, add between 1 and 4 inches of mulch to provide freeze and rain protection and enrich the soil.

Most experts recommend a quarter-inch layer of compost for best results, and you will need about .77 cubic yards of material per 1,000 square feet. To measure how much compost to use, take the square footage of your yard and multiply it by .77, then divide that number by 1,000.

Yes, you need to add topsoil before you hydroseed to ensure the roots can grow deep. You should cultivate and add compost or amendments to your soil before hydroseeding for optimal growth. Without topsoil, your hydroseed might not take root, leading to wasted effort and money down the drain. Soil preparation is key to the success of DIY hydroseeding.

Permits depend on local regulations concerning street use and public spaces. Check requirements with community authorities to avoid fines or logistical issues.

Yes, you can lay pea gravel directly on the dirt. First, dig a trench 2 to 6 inches deep the length and width of the area you want to cover. Plants and weeds will eventually grow through the pea gravel if you don’t lay down landscaping cloth.
