"So disappointed that Kevin subcontracted my roof project to another company! He sent a crew to my house that could not speak English and he was not at the jobsite to supervise. I had to call him repeatedly begging him to come over to the house and send a translator because the first crew was putting ice and water shield over the metal valleys and they were only adding one row of Ice and water shield to the eves!! He also said he was too busy to finish this week, and so he asked the subcontractors to put a tarp on my roof which did little to prevent water from getting inside. Because he refused to come to the jobsite and be the supervisor, the finished project was incomplete and now I need to hire a another company to finish the job and remove the roofing debris. When I tried to pay the final invoice, he added several hidden charges and when I said this was not fair, he said he will put a lien on my house for the $600 difference! What should I do? I guess he knows that it is cheaper for me to pay than to fight this. I don't know what to do?"

Insulation questions, answered by experts

It's essential to use insulation materials specifically designed for air ducts. Common types of duct insulation materials include fiberglass, foam board, and reflective foil. These insulation materials have the right properties to withstand the temperature and airflow conditions within the ductwork. Using the appropriate insulation not only ensures efficient temperature control but also prevents potential safety hazards or the release of harmful particles into the air.

Yes, products made from renewable resources and with reduced chemical impacts.

The type of insulation you need in your home depends on your location, the installation site, and your region’s climate. According to Energy Star, insulation in homes in the Southern United States should have an R-value of between R30 and R60 in attics and R13 to R25 in the floors and walls; homes in moderate climates require R values of R38 to R60 in attics and R25 to R30 in floors and walls; and homes in northern states require an R value of R49 to R60 in attics and R25 to R30 in floors and walls.

Unfaced wall insulation is easier to cut and install, making it the better choice for a DIY project. It’s also more affordable. But if it’s unfaced, you’ll likely need to add a vapor barrier to reach your desired R-value and efficiency, as it doesn’t offer any moisture barrier.

Faced insulation uses paper or foil to create a built-in barrier and doesn’t require an extra step. It’s also more fire-resistant and safe. But it’s quite a bit more expensive and a little bit harder to work with as a DIYer.

Unfortunately, pipes can freeze when exposed to prolonged freezing temperatures, whether or not you have installed insulation covers. Insulation covers, however, are still an excellent idea as they can reduce the chance of your pipe freezing by keeping the pipes closer to the temperature of the water inside the pipe.
