"We had them replace stairs and our lower deck at the lake house. Sales representative was very good and did tell us it would be a while before the work would be started. Took a bit longer than â the whileâ we anticipated based on his estimate and I friend calling to check on the status of the project. Thatâ s the only thing Iâ d mark them down on: communication while waiting. Installation team was good and cleaned the area well. Very happy with the results."

A door sill is the bottom portion of your door frame, while a threshold is the transition piece that separates the two types of flooring between rooms, or serves as the transition between the interior and exterior on an exterior door. The threshold sits on top of the door sill. A kick plate is a protective plate that sits against the face of a door to prevent damage to the door from feet and shoes. You’ll usually only find kick plates on exterior doors, while every door has a door sill, and most exterior and interior doors have a threshold.

Although some pet doors allow easier access for burglars or stray animals, there are ways to make pet doors more secure. To increase your home’s security, choose locking or electronically activated doors, use additional motion sensor security cameras, and install pet doors on a wall where door locking mechanisms are difficult to access.

The vast majority of hinges are symmetrical, and either side of the hinge can go on the door or the frame. Occasionally, you'll find a hinge specifically made for right or left-handed doors with different attachment hardware or larger plates on one side. In most cases, the large side of the hinge goes on the frame.

It is possible to install hinges backward, so be careful when placing them. Position the hinge so that the hinge pin faces the direction the door will swing. For example, if you're standing on the side the door will open into, the pin should be visible. To build a standard size, six-panel door yourself, you’ll need four 2-foot by 6-foot boards, one 2-foot by 8-foot or 2-foot by 10-foot board, and a sheet of 3/4-inch, paint-grade plywood. The 2-foot by 6-foot boards will serve as your stiles, top rail, and horizontal and vertical mullions, and the wider board will serve as the bottom rail, which is usually wider than the other horizontal pieces. The plywood will serve as the panels, but you’ll need around five 1-foot by 6-foot boards to make your own panels if you want to stain the door rather than paint it.

You can install many types of interior doors without a frame as long as the door is prehung or there is already an existing door in the opening. If the opening has never had a door installed, you will need to install a frame with the door. Consult a professional door installer to inspect the opening to determine whether or not it’s possible to place a door there without a frame.
