"The project went really well, and I couldn't be happier. Just as I requested, the new railing looks exactly like the old railing. "Mr. Kogan and Huron Masonry were incredible. I've lived in my home for 12 years now. My chimney not only looked decrepit, but was beginning to be downright dangerous from falling debris. I've got bids from some companies to fix it from door salesmen. Each bid I received was nearly 20% higher than what Huron Masonry bid. When I finally buckled down and decided to get it fixed, Mr. Kogan made the process so simple and comfortable for me. He was easy to speak with on the phone, being extremely open and honest about everything. He was at my house within 24 hours to personally see my problem. After we worked together to come up with the idea that I liked best, it may have only been 48 hours before there was a crew at my home working. His crew was extremely nice, and never stopped working. Each person was personable and a standup individual. It seemed that they were done as soon as they got there!! These guys have successfully proven themselves to me. I will assuredly never go with a company other than them for masonry work.

The obvious disadvantage of an automatic gate is that it runs on electricity. If the power goes out, it won’t open or close unless there’s a manual override. Many homeowners will need a backup generator so they don’t get stuck on either side of the gate, particularly when looking to park a vehicle. Automatic gates are also much more complicated than manual gates, with tech-heavy components that make them more expensive to repair.

If you only use your gate as a pedestrian, walking through without a vehicle, you’re fine to stick with a single fence gate. If your fence opening needs to accommodate vehicles of any kind, from cars to trucks to 4-wheelers, then a double fence gate will suit the space much better and give you more freedom. 

Generally, the standard 10- to 12-inch-long and 1- to 1.5-inch-diameter gate springs will work. However, if you have an especially wide, thick, or heavy garden gate, you may need to opt for a longer, broader—and pricier—model to ensure secure closure and good longevity. These typically range between 12 and 16 inches long and are over 1.5 inches in diameter.

Screen doors (sometimes called barrier doors) and security doors serve different primary functions. A screen door's main purpose is to allow airflow and keep pests out, featuring a lightweight frame and a mesh screen. A security door, however, is a heavy-duty structure designed to prevent unauthorized entry. Security doors are installed with permanent screws into the home's walls and are often equipped with deadbolts or other heavy-duty locking mechanisms for enhanced protection against intruders.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.
