"John with his team at Edwin Anthony Homes was an incredible gift to our family. We were building a new home from out of state, and we needed someone we could trust. John was referred to us, and after one meeting, I could tell that he would be the perfect person to manage our project. He and Ellen were knowledgeable, honest, helpful and understanding. They worked with our rigid budget with incredible flexibility. Any mistakes, which are a realistic part of any large scale project, were acknowledged and promptly and fairly resolved. The entire team went above and beyond for me and my family again and again, and I would refer them wholeheartedly to anyone looking for a 'good news' home building story. I would work with them again in a heartbeat and often reflect with gratitude on the beautiful, strong and safe home they built for my family."

"My parents are getting older and I was worried about my dad getting on a ladder and cleaning out the gutters. They were old and falling off the house. I am pretty sure they were the same ones since I lived there and I have been married for 12 years now. We live over an hour away and with work, it was getting hard to get over there to help them. I contacted Rock Solid as my neighbors had used them. George came out and provided us with a quote to replace the gutters and suggested gutter guards to help them stay cleaner longer. Man, I am so glad they went with them. I gives my wife and I peace of mind that my Dad isn’t on a ladder anymore."

"Joe came to our house, talked over our plans. I did some of the leg work to save some cash and he wrote up the plans. Saved me thousands buy letting me do some of the leg work and he offered it without me asking. Then once submitted the city came back with things I never even heard of and I called Joe. He called the city planing dept and they discussed it over. I few more details and it went right on thru for approval. I'm very happy with the results of JSN Design and Joe himself! Thank you so much so Joe... SIncerely Michael and Robyn Love."

Architects questions, answered by experts

In most cases, you should get an architect before you hire a builder. An architect will be the one to draw up formal plans for your project, including guidelines and even material lists for your builder to follow during construction. Many architects can even help you find builders, choose one for your project, and negotiate prices. Some are also willing to act as project managers throughout the process, working closely with a builder from start to finish.

Some homes, like those with flat roofs, may not have eaves at all. Some contemporary-style homes also lack eaves, although many may have abbreviated eaves to divert water and protect the walls and foundation. Homes without eaves often have specific types of gutters affixed directly to the edge of the roof to provide adequate drainage.

Federal and Colonial architecture are similar in that they both appear mostly utilitarian and symmetrical, but Federal architecture is a bit more ornate. Federal design often includes decorative palladium windows, window lintels, and, sometimes, columns surrounding a more decorative portico. Inside, Federal architecture is set apart by its centrally-located oval room. Additionally, Federal homes tend to have brick facades, whereas Colonial homes more often have wood siding.

Mid-century modern architecture was a popular home style throughout the U.S. from the 1950s to 1970s. Most homes feature a wide and symmetrical floor plan with low-sloped roofs and floor-to-ceiling windows. Its minimalism and balanced appearance are back on the home style scene, particularly when maximizing sunlight, airflow, and a blend with the home's natural surroundings.

You'll find Arts and Crafts homes across the country in varying styles. On the East Coast, bungalows and Tudor Revivals fill the Boston area through New Jersey. In the West, Mission-style homes incorporate terracotta shingles, white stucco siding, and rounded archways.
