If you have ripples, wrinkled areas, or carpet piling up along the baseboards, these are telltale signs that your carpet is not fully stretched. Release the carpet from the tack strip along one wall and use a stretcher or knee kicker to stretch out the carpet before securing it again.

Carpet glue is very sticky, but it's not permanent. The glue usually lasts as long as a typical carpet installation, which is five to 15 years. There are carpet glues for high-traffic areas, which are more high-quality and durable than others.

The best solvent for removing carpet glue depends on its chemical composition. Most carpet glue reacts well to a solvent made from orange oil. Use mineral spirits to remove tar-based glue, which has a darker, brownish tint. Methylene chloride paint stripper and lacquer thinner should also work, but beware of the nasty and dangerous fumes.

Most transition strips measure two to five inches wide, but it varies by floor type. The right gap for your flooring depends on the look you prefer. A wider gap allows more room for expansion, whereas a narrower gap requires a smaller transition strip but leaves less expansion room. You should have at least a one-inch gap between any floor types, but sometimes more.
