"The technicians did a great job on the installation of the solar panels and the equipment that goes along with the panels. They were total professionals! They were also instrumental in getting everything up and running the way it should. Custom Home Service did a great job taking care of the details, and always had time for any of our questions. They did a great job!!"

Just having moved to a cold weather area, we were unfamiliar with the difference between a furnace and a boiler, so we bought the furnace maintenance check-up. When the technician arrive he was unsure what

to do as he specializes in furnaces and that was how the appointment was listed. He did the best he could, but to ensure we received the best service and to address concerns that he was unfamiliar with, he contacted his supervisor. Within 10 minutes his supervisor arrived and they performed the inspection together, so we knew we had gotten a thorough check-up. They did not try to sell us on a bunch of things wrong with the unit though it is from the mid-80s, but they did state that there would be an additional cost as pricing is different for furnaces and boilers. I was a bit upset at first, but with the quality of service and that it was our mistake I was happy to pay. Further, we discuss the solar tank (we have older solar panels) which was showing rust at the bottom. Again, the supervisor gave a suggestion of buying a water sensor in case the tank ruptures while we are home, but didn't state it had to be changed out immediately. He suggested moving to a smaller wall-hung boiler  when we are ready to retire the current boiler and solar water heating system, but gave a rough estimate of $12k installed. He stated it would be about 20% more efficient, but again it was just a suggestion. They stated they would rather have repeat customers than try to squeeze every penny from someone and get a bad reputation. We will use them again as they were courteous, knowledgeable (if one didn't know, he was willing to ask for assistance), and very informative.

Solar Panels questions, answered by experts

No, you cannot turn on a new solar system before inspection. The inspector checks that the system is correctly connected to the grid and that safety components and features are in place. This process prevents problems on the electrical grid and offers protection against fire in your home.

Your local utility company may also require inspection documentation before you can connect to the grid. An inspection can ensure solar power efficiency and determine how you might increase it.

You can start narrowing your search for a reputable solar company by finding local, regional, and national companies that service your area and maintain positive reviews online. You should also check the Better Business Bureau’s (BBB) website to see if the company has complaints filed against them. Next, contact the remaining candidates and ask about installation timelines, warranty coverage, and financing options. Choose a company that offers a labor warranty that lasts at least 10 years and prioritizes cash purchases and solar loans.

Yes, going solar really saves money. In fact, according to some calculations, the average homeowner who switches from electric to solar power will save almost $2,000 a year on energy costs. While buying solar panels and switching to solar can be costly up front, the savings add up over time. If you can sell back extra energy or take advantage of tax incentives, your savings can be even higher.

Solar shingles typically last between 20 and 30 years, a lifespan comparable to that of traditional solar panels and standard asphalt shingles. The exact duration depends on the manufacturer and the quality of the installation. Because solar shingles are a newer technology, there is limited data on their actual long-term performance. Factors that can impact their durability and longevity include weather conditions, roof ventilation, and regular maintenance. To extend the life of your solar shingles, you should conduct regular inspections and cleaning, and make any necessary repairs as quickly as possible.

Although solar panels harness the sun's power, they come at an environmental cost. The manufacturing process requires large amounts of water and involves hazardous materials like cadmium, silicon, and gallium arsenide. These materials don’t pose safety hazards while the panels are in use but can pose a problem when left in landfills. Over time, hazardous materials can leach into the environment. This is why recycling solar panels whenever possible is better than taking them to landfills.
