"Excellent design and super sturdy. The inspector was very impressed. John thoroughly listened to what I wanted and suggested a composite instead of wood and am so glad he did. It was initially more expensive but no expense to maintain! Took longer than expected but if you're not in a hurry John will do it right."

"We enjoyed working with Jon for our porch restoration/repair! Our porch was sinking on one side. He established new footings, addressed rot, and rebuilt one side of the porch, including the decking. Our porch means a lot to us as it is one of our favorite elements of our 1890 Victorian home. We liked working with Jon because he is responsive, professional, pays attention to the details, communicates clearly, works hard, treats the property with respect, adapts quickly, thinks of creative solutions, and has fair rates. We look forward to working with Jon again in the future!"

Closets questions, answered by experts

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

Building custom cabinets or built-in furniture yourself is possible, especially for basic designs, if you have woodworking experience. For a professional result, hiring a service is recommended to ensure precision, high-quality craftsmanship, and superior finishes.

The vertical space between closet shelves depends on what you're storing. For clothing like shirts and sweaters, 10 to 12 inches is enough. Towels and linens need 12 to 15 inches, while tall storage bins may require 18 inches or more. Overcrowding your shelves can reduce accessibility and increase clutter, so be sure to leave breathing room for your items.

The differences between a built-in closet and a walk-in aren’t that different from a built-in wardrobe and a walk-in closet. It’s fairly simple—a walk-in closet is a closet you can physically enter, stand in, and walk around in. A built-in (whether wardrobe or closet) is more akin to covered shelves installed into a recess in the wall. Another big difference is walk-in closets almost always have traditional full-size doors, while built-ins either have no doors or use sliding doors.

Custom closet renovations offer a return on investment of 50% to 60%. This means that if you spend $2,000 on a closet remodel, you can expect to see your home's value increase by $1,000 to $1,200. Investing in a custom closet allows you to enhance your daily living experience while building equity.
