Burning a single palm tree stump, if you’re careful, is technically doable DIY. However, you should always take precautions to control the fire and do research if you’re burning multiple types of trees. 

Some trees, such as ornamental trees, black cherry, and some oak trees, release toxins into the air when burned that can be irritating to your lungs (or even dangerous) to breathe in.

In general, it will take about 90 minutes to burn the creosote sweeping log by itself, allowing it to work its magic. This may be longer or shorter depending on the conditions of your chimney.

While your forced heating system runs, it can pick up dirt, dust, hair, and other particles from inside your house. Changing your furnace filters regularly is key to preventing this debris from getting stuck in your ducts and swirling around your home. With some types of furnaces, there’s also the potential for carbon monoxide leaks. However, staying up-to-date with your HVAC inspections and installing carbon monoxide sensors can help mitigate this risk.

While a hot fire can help heat up and loosen tar within your chimney, making it a recommended step before using a creosote log, it will not burn off significant existing buildup on its own. Attempting to remove built-up creosote with a hot fire is dangerous and can cause a chimney fire. For safe and effective removal of caked-on creosote, the best approach is to hire a professional chimney sweep.
