"Only one to offer a quick fix to get thru the winter. Once we got our schedules aligned (and mother nature calmed herself a bit) tasks were prompt and went smooth. Provided a fair deal."

"Jim handled the project in a manner consistent with the condo association rules without anyone complaining about noise, debris cleanup, work hours or the myriad complaints that usually come along with any project performed in a condo association. Jim met the condo association rule to match our deck precisely with existing and surrounding decks that were built in the early 90s. In addition, the price paid for the work was reasonable and the quality of the work is, thus far, near perfect."

"I retained the services of Jose Leon Handyman to retain/repaint a small decorative maintenance shed belonging to the land trust of which I am president. The job included pre-washing/cleaning of cedar shingles, replacing several broken shingles, and replacing the cedar shutters, as well as fixing a number of small problems that were discovered while Mr. Leon was working for us; as well as the added job of resealing a small asphalt court and painting a hop-scotch court thereon. Although Mr. Leon's rates are not cheap, they are reasonable and competitive. I would again retain the services of Jose Leon Handyman and recommend him to others. I was extremely impressed with the quality of his work and the breadth of his skills. He is a good man to know!"

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

When staining a deck, don’t skip surface prep, avoid staining damp or dirty boards, and don’t apply stain in extreme heat, cold, or wet conditions. Never overload the wood with a stain, as too much can cause tackiness or peeling. Also, don’t forget to test a small area first to ensure the color and finish look right.

For the best results, stay off of your deck for at least 48 hours after sealing it. Giving the sealant at least two full days to cure ensures it can fully penetrate the wood, giving you the most protection from sun and weather damage later on. Walking on the deck too soon can prevent it from properly curing and cause your deck to weather prematurely.

Two coats of stain are ideal for the best protection and aesthetic appeal. However, if your decking is made of particularly dense hardwood, you may only need one coat. If you want an intense color, two coats are ideal.

Cutting the boards directly is one of the fastest ways to remove deck boards with hidden fasteners. Mark two parallel lines that are one-third of the total measurement on both ends and cut out the centerpiece. Then, remove the end of the board that doesn’t have a fastener. Finally, pry open the fastened side and pull it up to pop out the screw or access the fastener. This also allows you to salvage portions of boards for other projects.

For a 12x20-foot (240-square-foot) deck, you can expect to pay between $7,200 and $14,400. This cost is based on a general price of $30 to $60 per square foot. The final price will depend on factors such as the decking material, design complexity, deck type, location, and local labor costs. Keep in mind that add-ons will increase the total; for example, adding an under-deck drainage system to a deck of this size could cost an additional $7,700.
