"I was very impressed with Sentri Homes - their customer service was excellent. They sent a subcontractor to install some vinyl laminate in my bathroom and he ended up getting glue all over the carpet in our bedroom. The sub ended up ghosting both me and Sentri, leaving me stuck with a ruined carpet. Sentri stuck with me for over a month to get the carpet replaced with the identical original and to get the vinyl job 100% completed. The carpet was a Home Depot exclusive and Sentri handled everything with them. I will be using Sentri for a much bigger renovation I have coming up soon, because I know that they will make sure everything gets done right no matter what problems come up. The vinyl looks great too."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

A major mistake during home building in MI is underestimating the required 42-inch frost depth for footings. Accepting shallow foundations leads to severe structural movement within a few winters. Homeowners also skip the permit process, resulting in forced demolition of uninspected work. Finally, ignoring strict energy code requirements for insulation and window specifications guarantees poor cold-weather performance and failed building inspections. Always verify local regulations before starting construction.

Helpful?

Ignoring seasonal moisture management is a quick way to damage recent home building work in Big Rapids. Failing to clear gutters before a freeze or leaving downspouts directed at the foundation accelerates frost heave. Allowing heavy snow to accumulate on roofs overstresses the framing. You should also maintain caulking around windows and doors, as temperature extremes cause sealants to fail faster, leading to water infiltration and structural rot.

Helpful?

The physical condition of your lot directly dictates your home building approach in Big Rapids. Dense tree cover requires extensive clearing and alters site drainage. Proximity to wetlands or the river restricts your buildable footprint due to strict environmental setbacks. Sloped terrain supports walkout basements, while flat areas with high water tables demand slab-on-grade designs. Existing soil quality determines the necessary foundation engineering and excavation requirements.

Helpful?

Before starting home building work in Big Rapids, gather your legal property description, current deed, and any recorded easements. You must document the floodplain status and wetland boundaries to avoid regulatory violations. Secure a current land survey showing property lines and existing structures. Locate all underground utilities and confirm your zoning designation to ensure your proposed structure meets local setback and lot coverage requirements.

Helpful?

Correctly executed home building in MI will have a complete set of closed permits with passing inspections. The foundation footings will reach the required 42-inch frost depth to prevent seasonal shifting. Finished grading must slope away from the structure to ensure proper drainage. You will also see continuous flashing at all roof intersections and documented compliance with strict state energy codes for insulation and windows.
