This can be a messy process, taking some physical effort and additional time over the other drain-clearing options. You can purchase a drain snake at a hardware store and choose from handheld options or those attached to a drill. Snakes can occasionally enter homes through shower drains, although it’s quite rare. This can happen when they follow sewer pipes or accidentally find their way into plumbing systems. To minimize the risk, consider installing drain covers or stoppers on your shower drains. Always keep drains closed when they’re not in use, especially in areas where snakes are known to be active.

Even if the shower drain doesn’t seem clogged or dirty, plan to clean it out about once per month—or more frequently if you or your family shed a lot of hair. It’s a good practice to remove any hair from the drain on a daily basis, as hair can accumulate fast and cause clogs in no time. You may also want to have a plumber thoroughly clean the drains in your home once every six months.

To unclog a plumbing vent, you first need to locate it. Look at your home's roofline. The plumbing vent will be a vertical pipe sticking straight up from the roof. Since this pipe runs all the way to the main drain underneath your house, you should also be able to find it in the attic.

Main sewer lines can clog for several reasons. For example, if you regularly dump oil or grease down your drain, it could eventually block your line. Sometimes, tree roots can penetrate and grow inside old sewer pipes, creating a major blockage. Flushing bulky items (like paper towels, diapers, or baby wipes) can also clog your plumbing system.
