"We hired Aden and his crew to install two windows near our kitchen on a wall that previously hadn’t had any. Aden patiently worked with us to find a solution within our budget and began work ONE DAY after signing the contract—well ahead of the timeline we had expected. From start to finish, he was responsive, accommodating, and enthusiastic about our vision. We are quite pleased with his work and would not hesitate to contact him again for future projects!"

"I purchased 2 coupons offered for handyman services. I checked to see if he was able to do a good job on finishing mud onn some drywall patching and some new. He said he felt he could do a good job. He did let me combine my prepaid coupons, but never offered to finish the job at my expense. He didn't call or show up one day he was supposed to come. He came late another day and didn't call.  I found myself calling him a few different times to find out if he was really coming or not or why he didn't show up. I am going to have to finish the job myself. He asked me if I wanted to finish sanding instead of having him come back. At that point I was not happy with his not always showing up, and said I would finish the sanding. There will also need to be another coat in many places, even though he seemed to imply he felt it was done except for the sanding. He somewhat cleaned up after himself. He did stay longer the last day than he was paid for. I will not hire him again

Drywall questions, answered by experts

If your home was built before the 1940s and was not remodeled in the past 50 or so years, you probably have plaster walls. Aside from assuming, there are some practical ways to tell if you have plaster walls, including the following: If you knock on the wall and it feels solid, not hollow, if you can’t insert a thumbtack easily, if there are cracks that look like spiderwebs, or if your home has curved, arched, or swirled walls, doorways, or window openings.

If you have an unfinished basement or attic, you could examine the backs of any finished walls to check, too.

Costs range from $500 to $5,000, depending on damage size, labor, and finishing requirements.

Most drywall used for interior walls of homes is 1/2-inch thick. This size strikes a balance of being easy to handle and hang while being thick enough for the durability needed on interior wall applications.

Plaster is a pretty tough surface, but it can still sustain damage from things like bumping against it, water issues, dampness, extreme humidity changes, and plain old age. Most plaster walls last hundreds of years and will only be taken down to the base layer when major repairs are required. Being cautious around the wall, not placing furniture against it, and ensuring stable humidity are all great ways to reduce possible damage.

Certain drywall textures, like sand and sometimes popcorn, can be smoothed by applying skim coats, sanding the walls, or chipping away the texture. However, it’s worth considering removing the texture and starting with a blank canvas. Smoothing textured walls requires a lot of sandpaper and elbow grease and can take longer than just outright removing the texture.
