"Bob contacted us right away via phone. I explained what we needed done (purchased the legs of an old lathe that were quite rusted and needed to be sandblasted before we could repurpose them as table legs). He made an appointment with us for the next day to give us an estimate for the project and showed up at the appointed time. He took the legs with him to sandblast them in his shop and promptly returned them the next day ready for us to paint them!"

"I have a heat pump as my primary heating and cooling device for the house. Late last Winter I noticed it was running alot and my house was still pretty cold. I called BRF and explained my concerns. The owner of the company personally came out to make sure the job was done correctly. He quickly identified a leak in my old system and was able to repair it. He then took extra care to make sure an adaquate vacuum was pulled on the system before topping it back up. The result was a huge bump in efficiency and rooms that are ice cold on the hottest days. I've only had to use the heat function once since the fix and it will drive you out of the house. The best part is that while we were waiting on the vacuum pump to do its job, he also gave me helpful information on increasing the efficiency in my home all around. It's pretty clear that he knew what he was doing and has a vast knowledge of the state run incentive programs."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Several types of insulation are effective for crawl spaces, with spray foam and rigid foam boards being two of the best options. Closed-cell spray foam insulation is a strong choice because it effectively repels moisture, resists biological growth, seals the air, and provides excellent thermal protection, especially in hard-to-reach areas. Rigid foam insulation boards are another excellent material as they insulate well, resist water damage, and will not settle over time like fiberglass or cellulose.

Insulating windows without plastic is usually the better method. Outside of simply replacing your windows, you could buy cellular shades, which trap air between the window and the home, add a window film that blocks UV rays and traps heat, or cover your windows with a low-emissivity coating called “low-E.”

Insulating under a concrete slab foundation is a great way to improve the energy efficiency of your home, but it isn't necessary for outdoor projects like driveways, patios, sidewalks, and walkways. If you’re pouring in cold weather, insulating under the slab can help prevent heat loss from the concrete, aiding in proper curing. Along with accelerants, this can be a good way to ensure strong concrete despite pouring in the cold.

Yes, you should insulate behind shower walls. Insulating helps prevent heat loss, which keeps the shower or tub from getting too cold and helps maintain a comfortable temperature in your bathroom. Additionally, proper insulation and air sealing can help prevent wall rot and moisture buildup. It is recommended to use a high R-value rated foam insulation combined with a vapor barrier.

Three signs that you need crawl space insulation are drafts, high energy bills, and mold. Drafts can start in crawl spaces and cause hot or cold air to spread to the rest of your home through holes in the floors and walls. And even if your entire home is well-insulated, you can still feel an unchecked draft from your crawl space and in your utility bill. Uninsulated crawl spaces can let in air and moisture, and because they’re built directly on the ground and difficult to dry out, they are hotspots for mold and mildew.
