You should avoid staining your fence during hot weather or when it’s raining, because heat and moisture can make the stain dry unevenly. Instead, the best time to stain a fence is when the weather is dry and temperatures are between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Stain is meant to be absorbed by the porous wood, allowing some of the natural grain to show through. Late spring or early summer is usually the best time to stain a fence. Pick your timing carefully and aim to start your DIY when you see a forecast that shows no rain and low humidity levels for at least a few days. If it’s too hot (like in the middle of summer), the stain will dry out too quickly. If it’s too cold (like in the winter and early spring), the stain might not be able to fully dry.

Select based on wood type, climate tolerance, and personal preference for color and finish, with choices like oil-based stains for longevity.

A properly applied coat of stain will last between 3 and 8 years, depending on your climate. If you live in a place where your fence experiences a lot of moisture or high heat, your stain will last for a shorter period than in more temperate conditions. We recommend reapplying stain every 3 to 5 years to keep your wood in good condition.
