"EXCELLENT CONTRACTOR. My project was drywall installation during a bathroom remodel. I chose Golden Rule after reading the reviews and obtaining an estimate. The price matched the budget I had set for this part of the project. The work was performed during four visits over four days (drying periods are required for drywall). Michael showed up on time each day. He was very polite and very helpful with explanation of drywall techniques and also offered advice on other household repairs I might need. If you're comfortable hanging drywall yourself, you may be comfortable finishing it. But it's worth noting that finishing drywall adds several steps to the process and a lot of waiting time. Hiring a drywall installer may be the way to go if you'd rather spend your time doing other things or are nervous about leaving a rough surface.

You can usually tell if you have plaster or drywall by touch (plaster is harder, colder, and smoother than drywall) or by tapping on it (drywall sounds hollow, plaster does not). If you still cannot tell, peek under an outlet cover and check the cut edges. The rough edges show the composition of the wall. You will see either drywall (two paper sheets sandwiching gypsum material) or only plaster material (no paper sheets).

It is possible to apply plaster on the interior or exterior of your home, but we don’t recommend it. Plaster is easy to apply in theory, but in reality, it can be a challenging material to work with, and it’s difficult to get the finished product to look clean, even, and smooth. Many DIYers end up calling in a professional afterward to touch up the area or even redo it entirely because of mistakes they made in the process. Hiring a plaster pro will cost more, but it’s usually the best option to achieve high-quality results.

The best way to make long, straight cuts is to use a utility knife and a T-square to score the sheet, snap along the score, and then finish the cut by cutting through the paper on the opposite side with the utility knife. If you’re making small cuts, curved cuts, or cutouts for electrical boxes or light fixtures, you can use a manual jab saw to keep costs down, but an electric spiral saw or oscillating multi-tool will get the cleanest, fastest cuts possible.

You do not need to drywall over most types of garage insulation. However, doing so can increase noise reduction, make the space more attractive, and keep children and pets from touching harmful fiberglass insulation. If you’re using cellulose or some other type of blown-in insulation (fiberglass and mineral wool are common), you will need drywall to contain the insulation material.
