I had worked hard to gather the items that I needed for this business to load into their truck to take to the dump. I put a tag on each item that needed to go. The last thing that I did was to open my basement door to allow access. The door wouldn't open. I juggled the door locks and I pulled the knob with all of my strength. It would not budge. My phone rang; they had just arrived with their truck! What could I do? They would not be able to remove anything with the door locked!! I greeted them outside and explained my problem. Your garbage disposal will only affect the health of your septic tank if you’re using it too frequently, or filling it with organic waste that doesn’t fully break down. If the tank fills up with too many solids, the bacteria won’t have enough time to consume it before more is added, which can lead to an overflow in the drain field. Your tank will need to be pumped more frequently with excessive or improper garbage disposal use.

These appliances do unscrew, but you need to disconnect everything properly when you replace your garbage disposal. Make sure you shut the power off to the area first and check that it’s off with a voltage detector. Disconnect the main drain line and P-trap, and then disconnect the dishwasher drain line if you have one connected. You can then unscrew your garbage disposal using a disposal wrench. Just make sure you disconnect the electrical lines before removing your appliance.

Whether you choose to repair your garbage disposal will depend on the problem. For minor issues like a bad seal, you can fix the unit for less than $10. If the motor unit is broken, which can easily cost $150, you may want to consider replacing the entire disposal if it’s getting on in years. 

The main issue with garbage disposals is clogging. This can mean a clogging of the pipes that expel the food along with water, or a clogging of the mechanical parts themselves. The problem lies in the solution because you can’t easily see clogs if they’re inside the system, and reaching in to dislodge stuck items is a risky proposal. Call a pro and ask what they would do, but if you can’t see the clog easily, and running the unit won’t free it, you need to let a professional handle the fix. 

Once you have your garbage disposal disconnected, you can remove the mounting bracket by unscrewing the bolts that are holding the bracket. You can back them out just enough to pop off the snap ring, which prevents the bottom portion of the bracket from disconnecting from the top when you unscrew the bolts. Use a regular screwdriver to pop off the snap ring, and the rest of the components should fall off by themselves.
