"Had wind damage that culminated in my insurance company deciding to replace my roof. Interviewed 5 companies and decided on Clark. Their price wasn't the least expensive, but right in the middle. More importantly, I had a gut feeling this family-run business was going to do me right. And they're local. Now that the project is complete, I'm glad I went with my gut feeling. I had to leave on business after the first day of the project (which was at the 99% completion point) and haven't been home since to inspect their work. However, my wife who is much more switched on than me, has been there and would've alerted me to any issues. Since she's always in the yard working and with the kids, believe me, I would've heard about nails, destroyed shrubs or any other visible roof issues. Haven't heard a peep (Thank you Clark). Overall, Clark has done everything they have said they were going to do - met timelines, timely responses to questions and minor issues, and fantastic customer service. They were very accommodating when I had to wait for insurance money to make the final payment. It's evident every last one of them has a stake in the business when they go the extra mile to ensure their customers are satisfied. Now, I have to say the true test will be a year from now when there's a leak somewhere and I need them to fix it. But I have every bit of confidence they will take care of me if it ever comes to that. Last thing, although I've lived in the county for 10 years, I've never met any of them before and I'm not related to them. So there's no nepotism here."

"Minor Adjustments helped us design our step-up deck, and the cost was fair and reasonable. The work crew was energetic, precise in their measurements, and careful in the craftsmanship. We are thoroughly satisfied with the results. Matt Minor, the owner, and his crew, deserve a definite A++ rating."

"They did excellent work, on time, and on budget. Their workers were courteous and made sure the work was done right. I had them install railing on my deck, wrap the deck in PVC board, and add river rock under the deck. I also had them repair the roof to my shed and repair the rock facade to my front porch. Chase, by far, exceeded my expectations and made sure the work was done to my satisfaction. I would hire him again and recommend him to anyone doing remodeling."

"Colin came to the house and spent a lot of time with me deciding what would the best deck for my house would look like. After several days of me bothering him incessently he patiently layed out for me what turned out to be an absolutely stunning deck. The quality of work is beyond anything I have seen in my neighbors and friends decks. Colin worked with me on the price and he took a hit on the chin when the design ran into a problem with the landscape of my yard. He corrected the design and added a wrap around to account for my yard issues. He refused to add a penny to the job for the change even though it cost him supplies and time."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

The best way to sand a deck is by cleaning it, sanding the boards and stairs with 60- or 80-grit sandpaper, and sanding the railings and posts with 80-grit sandpaper. You should sand in the direction of the wood grain to avoid damaging the timber. When sanding your deck, use medium pressure and aim for an even sand. Pressing too hard with a sander can damage decks, as most are softwoods.

Yes, pressure washing a wood deck can be a good idea as it effectively lifts ingrained dirt, mold, and mildew, improving the deck's appearance and longevity. However, it must be done carefully, as it's easy to damage the wood, especially softwoods. To pressure wash safely, use a lower pressure setting and a wide, 40-degree fan pattern nozzle (often white). Keep the nozzle at least a foot away from the wood surface and maintain constant motion, avoiding hovering in one spot to prevent gouging.

Composite decking may never warp, or it may warp quickly. Several factors can influence the rate of warping, including the material's quality, installation method, and installation location. Generally speaking, high-quality materials that have been installed properly are drastically less prone to warping.

Deck boards should be spaced no more than three-eighths of an inch apart. This is enough space to allow water and small debris to pass through without collecting on the surface, but not enough to create a tripping hazard. Certain materials, like pressure-treated wood, shrink over time, so they may need less space at installation.

Composite decking requires a solid foundation, substructure, or subframe to ensure stability. This base is typically composed of posts, beams, joists, and footings. The frame's joists can be built from various materials like composite, plastic, timber, or metal, as long as the base can support the deck's weight without shifting. A professional deck builder might recommend installing the frame on a solid concrete base for added durability. The final design and materials for the substructure will depend on your budget, the type of deck, and environmental conditions.
