"We’ve hired Teddy from Mr. Handyman several times over the last few years, and we are always super impressed with his work. He is highly skilled at virtually every kind of task, large or small, and always knows how to tailor the job to the particular needs of our house. He’s installed exterior crawl-space doors, caulked around bathroom fixtures, shaved our wooden doors so they’d be able to close again, and replaced door knobs, among other things. And today, he installed new fireplace doors to perfection. He works thoughtfully and carefully, finding the best solution for each issue, protecting the house from any damage (even when carrying large doors through narrow hallways!), and cleaning up after the work is done. When choosing a door for the space between your garage and house, steel is your best bet for fire safety. While wood—and sometimes glass—doors are common, they have lower fire-ratings. Fire-rated steel doors can withstand flames for up to three hours—double what wood can manage (90 minutes). Glass, while non-combustible, can crack under extreme heat. Steel may cost more, but it also offers the best protection. Steel isn’t the most aesthetically pleasing choice, but as long as your door meets the International Residential Code (IRC) standards, it’ll do its job in protecting your family and home.

You can attach the hinges to either the door or the frame first, depending on your preference. The order will not affect how the door hangs or the ease of installation. However, we recommend starting with the top hinge over the bottom one for stability, as it’s much easier to support the door from below while you install the top hinge. It will also be easier to pull the door outward from the hinges as it hangs from the top than it would be to push the door toward the hinges, as there’s less clearance on the lock side.

Standard door sizes aren’t one-size-fits-all, but there are common go-to dimensions. For exterior doors—like your front door—36 inches wide by 80 inches tall is typical, though you’ll see 30- or 32-inch widths too, especially in older homes. Interior doors vary more. Bedrooms and bathrooms often use 30- to 32-inch widths, and closet doors can be anything from slim singles to wide bi-folds. Height is usually 80 inches across the board; however, always measure your actual opening. “Standard” only works if it matches what’s already in place.

Using force to open a door is not recommended, as this could cause serious injury or permanent damage to your door and surrounding door frame. If it’s a front door that you’ve lost the keys for, it’s better to call a locksmith. If it’s an interior door without any lock that you plan on keeping, a handyman can help. Finally, if it’s an old door that you plan to replace anyway, a professional door installer can remove the stuck door and source a replacement.
