"I cannot say enough good things about the folks at Masters Chimney. Mark and Jeff were terrific to work with and worked with us to get our fireplace inspections and repairs done in a timely fashion to accommodate the sale of our house. Their team was hard-working and efficient and made sure the repairs went smoothly. I highly recommend the folks at Masters Chimney - they are great!"

"Chimney experts was very professional in both scheduling and the job. Al was very thorough to not only look at the chimney, but also to stay with me until we had fully built a fire and had it burning long enough to run a full test of the appliance. Would highly suggest for inspection and installation- they know the business well."

"Hired him to clean our chimney, for a wood-burning fireplace insert with chimney liner. We also needed several fire bricks replaced, which he did. Also needed adjustment of the firebox door, which had become a bit loose. He did all the above to our satisfaction, and our chimney draws much better now. We're very happy with his work."

"I was contacted the same day I submitted my inquiry and had a scheduled appointment with in 24 hours. Finest Chimney contacted me 25 minutes before they arrived and they were exactly on time. Cleaning took about 20 minutes and they were very thorough and professional. They even gave me some feed back about future roof/chimney repairs. I will definitely call Finest Chimney Sweep for our future needs."

"I really liked this company. The quality of their work was first rate. I really appreciated their expertise and professionalism. The folks who did the work were extremely courteous, informative, and very neat considering working in fireplaces and chimneys is not the cleanest job. Their pricing was fair and competitive. As much as I would have liked to give them 5 stars all around, we had a communication disconnect. Although they ultimately dealt with it in a highly satisfactory manner, in the process it caused much consternation at a time that was overall quite stressful for us. We were in the process of selling our home, which sold almost immediately resulting in a move-out schedule far more compressed than we had anticipated. Repair of the chimney and fireplaces was the major contingency on the sales contract. After an extensive and thorough inspection, their estimate for returning them to working order was $4,100. I relayed this to my realtor who felt that the scope of work could be reduced and still meet the contingency. I discussed this with American Chimney Sweeps, and they gave me a revised quote that was about half the original. I made a point of explaining to them that, were we staying in the home, we would proceed with the full scope of work, but at this point we wanted to do only the minimum necessary to satisfy the contingency, i.e., "Inspect and clean chimney and fireplaces and return to working order." With this understanding, we scheduled the work. Upon completion the technician wrote on the receipt that the fireplaces were unsafe and constituted a fire hazard absent the completion of the full scope of work as specified in the original quote. Clearly there was a serious miscommunication between the technical and the management people at American Chimney Sweeps. In my attempts to resolve this I spent more time speaking to their answering machine than to company personnel. The balance of the work was finally scheduled and completed on a timely basis. Again, the quality of the work was excellent. They apologized profusely and gave us a discount for the inconvenience. We prefer and like to support small businesses like this one, which happens to be woman-owned. Were we staying in Northern Virginia, we wouldn't hesitate to use them again and highly recommend them. No company is perfect. Mistakes and miscommunication occur. The difference is in how they deal with them. American Chimney Sweeps resolved this quite satisfactorily and did redeem themselves."

"Arrived on time. Showed me the inside of my chimney via a live view video monitor. He made me more knowledgeable, during the chimney inspection, about chimney maintenance, chimney flues, vents, blowers and benefits to upgrading to gas fireplace. Excellent price. Highly recommend."

Chimney Inspection questions, answered by experts

First, stop working with the suspecting scammer immediately. Gather any relevant information and documents from your dealings with them. If you used a credit or debit card to pay them, call your bank and report fraud. Report the scamming company to the police, and then call your insurance company to see what coverage they offer for this type of incident.

It’s possible to walk on a clay tile roof, but you run the risk of breaking or cracking the tiles if you’re not careful, so it’s best not to walk on it if you can avoid it. If you or a contractor needs roof access, be sure to distribute your weight evenly and step on the portions of tile that are also supported underneath, which depends on your tile design. Walking on any roofing material is inherently dangerous, so wear rubber-soled shoes and use safety equipment if you need to access your roof.

Meshed fiberglass tape is your best option if you want to tape up a leaking ceiling. Even then, that is not a permanent solution and you need to address the root cause of the leak. Also, you still need to apply drywall material on top of the tape and repaint the ceiling, instead of leaving the tape exposed as-is. Finally, this method only works on minor leaks and as a band-aid solution.

Homeowners insurance typically covers roof repairs or replacement if the damage is caused by a sudden, accidental event or a covered peril, such as a storm, wind, hail, fire, or a falling tree. However, insurance will not cover repairs or replacement for issues stemming from a lack of maintenance, normal wear and tear, or a roof that is simply old and at the end of its lifespan. If a leak or damage occurs due to neglect, you will likely have to pay for repairs out of pocket.

Fall is generally considered the best time of year for roof repairs. The weather is temperate and typically drier, which makes for safer working conditions and fewer delays. The days are also still long enough to complete the work.

Spring is another good option and is a popular time for repairs to fix damage from winter storms. However, frequent rainfall can slow down progress. Spring may be a less busy season for roofers than fall.

Summer can also work for roof repairs, but extreme heat can make asphalt shingles too soft and difficult to work with.
