"Stan, the owner, and his crew did an outstanding job on our wood back deck and front deck stair replacement. The quality of their work was excellent, and they completed everything quickly and professionally. They were friendly, respectful, and kept the work area clean. Additionally, the price was very fair considering the quality provided. I highly recommend Stan’s Home Improvement to anyone looking for reliable, skilled, and reasonably priced work!"

"We are very happy with our resurfaced deck and screened porch. It is exactly what we envisioned. Leonpros builders worked despite the freezing, snowy weather. They left the job clean and orderly every evening. The builders were always courteous and professional. We have a beautiful screened house on our deck. I have recommended Leonpro Services to family and neighbors. I would use them again."

"Mike called on Saturday and offered to do the job that afternoon for what seemed to be a very reasonable price. He came at the time he said and replace the three vent collars and was done in about an hour. Mike was a clean cut guy who knew what he was doing. I watched him from the ground. He used personal safety equipment while on the roof and took his time and did the job right. There was no preassure sales pitch for additional work. I definately would call Step It Up Construction again if/when I need anything else done. Thank you!"

"Mr. Handyman helped me in all aspects of this large project, from measuring and ordering materials at the start to clean-up at the end. Installation of both patio doors and of garage doors went beautifully, as did replacement of front banisters and repair of old termite damage. The crews were always prompt and notified me by email that they were on their way. The were clean and courteous, and cleaned up after themselves. Mr. Handyman's Dennis Jennings, with his attention to detail, was key to this project being a great success."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

The best direction for a gate to swing depends on its location and purpose, but swinging inward is the general rule. An inward swing is often considered safer, prevents the gate from opening into public spaces like a sidewalk, and may be required by local building codes.

There are exceptions and specific considerations. If your property is on a slope, an inward swing might not be possible. For a deck gate, it's safest to have it swing away from any steps. In a backyard, the direction can be a matter of preference, though an inward swing can be helpful when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

Regardless of direction, ensure the gate can open fully without hitting any objects or blocking spaces. While an inward swing is standard, a gate that can swing both in and out offers the most flexibility if your setup allows for it.

It is possible to build your own deck, but it’s typically better to leave the work to a decking professional. Decks can be exceptionally complicated, especially if you want a wrap-around or second-story deck, and you don’t want to risk making an expensive or dangerous mistake. It’s usually better to hire a decking pro who can pull permits and build a structurally sound deck that will last for decades and provide the maximum return on investment.

While the terms deck and porch are often used interchangeably, they are two distinct structures. A porch is a covered structure, usually attached to the front of a home, that offers protection from the elements. In contrast, a deck is an open, uncovered platform, often attached to the back or side of a home. Because porches have a roof, they typically require less maintenance than decks, but both features need regular cleaning and repairs to stay in good condition.

Whether to paint or stain a deck depends on your personal preference for appearance and budget. Stain provides a natural look with a range of undertones, is typically less expensive, and may only require one coat, but it does not last as long as paint. Paint offers a sleeker finish with a virtually unlimited color palette. Both options will protect your deck from outdoor elements like rain, snow, and general wear and tear.

Yes, using sustainable materials and recycled composites offer green solutions.
