"I would like to start by saying I researched this company thoroughly on different websites and met with a member of the company and I thought they were really going to turn out to be a great choice for my project. It ended up not being the case for me. I feel like I was treated as if my business was not wanted or needed and I am disappointed. I am still just sitting here“shaking my head” at the whole interaction. I went to a home remodeling show at the Baltimore Convention Center on Friday, February 16, 2018. I met a representative for the company that was working the booth at the show and explained that I was looking to add a porch to the front of my house. We spoke at length with someone that ended up being a designer for the company and showed him some “inspiration photos” of ideas we had in mind for the project. We showed him two pictures on a phone with crude Photoshop renderings of our house with some images of different porches we admired added to the front of our house just for a reference point. The designer gave us his card and told us to call the company to set up an appointment for him to come out and measure and discuss the project further. On February 27th 2018 we contacted the AES Customer Care department and made an appointment for the designer to come out for measurements and other information needed for an estimate. When we mentioned the “inspiration pics” we had we were asked to email them to the company in care of the Customer Care person that set up the estimate appointment. At that time an appointment was made for March 14, 2018. On March 14, 2018 at 3pm the same designer we met at the remodeling show arrived and took measurements of the front of the house. He was just as nice as he had been when we first met him. He stated that he didn’t feel one of the ideas we showed him would work because the pitch of the existing roof was too low to add dormers. He stated the second “inspiration pic” idea would work he thought. He drew some quick sketches on his IPad to explain to us why he didn’t think the dormers would work and we agreed. He also showed us a picture he had on his IPad of a porch project he designed for another customer. It was similar to what we were looking for and the house in the picture was similar to ours in the style. We really liked it. He explained at length how he would build the foundation of the porch without having to pour a lot of concrete and the different finishes we could use. He was probably at the house for about 2 hours answering our questions and explaining things. He told us he could produce a computer image for us of roughly how the porch in his picture on the IPad would look on our house--He stated he would need to do a computer drawing anyway in order to generate the estimate and he would share the drawing with us so we could get a general idea of how it would look. He told us it would take “about two weeks” to get the drawing and the estimate to us. If and when we signed a contract, work would begin approximately 90 days later because they were so busy he said. He left stating he knew “exactly what we wanted” (his words). Two weeks came and went and we heard nothing. I emailed the Customer Care Department on Friday 4/20/18 @ 12:52pm to ask how the estimate was coming along since it had been a little over a month. The same Customer Care Dept. person we set the appointment up with initially responded @ 1:05pm to say they would ask the designer to contact us as to when we could expect the estimate. I emailed Customer Service again on Friday, 5/4/18 @ 11:50am to say we still hadn’t heard from the designer. The Customer Care Dept. (same person) responded @ 11:52am to say he will let the designer know we are expecting communication from him. (No apology for the delay or anything else, just that one sentence). On Thursday 5/31/18 @ 12:32 I again emailed the Customer Care Dept. to say “I am reaching out one last time in an attempt to get an estimate. I am hoping this bad initial experience is not reflective of the company as a whole. Is there someone that can email me an estimate? At 12:42 the Customer Care department (same person I’ve been communicating with) responded saying “I will contact the designer and request him to contact you to let you know when to expect those mock–ups” (again, no apology or anything other than that one sentence). FINALLY on 5/31/18 @ 4:52pm I received the email below from the designer. He cc’d the Customer Care Dept. person I had been communicating with as well as the owner of the company. “I apologize as to any confusion with emails as I had sent you a couple emails a few weeks ago and then before that as well so I am replying to this thread. We had sat down and looked at your existing roof line and determined that because the original pitch on your roof was to low to add any kind of meaningful dormers and to connect a front porch based on that look. We felt it better to have an engineer look at what you want to accomplish and then do some structural drawings to get a proper spread and from those drawings (if it were possible) we could do a build cost and take off. The existing roof line was to low to present any kind of structural and finished look for what you wanted. Let us know if you would like the name and number of an engineer” I responded to all on 5/31/18 @ 8:06 pm. In a nutshell I said I would be interested in seeing proof of those sent emails because I never received anything from him at all after he left my house on March 14th. I reiterated the things he had done and said when he came to the house that I talked about above and said there was never a discussion regarding an engineer or anything remotely similar. I also said how disappointed I was. I never received any further communication from the designer, Customer Service Dept. person I communicated with that was cc’d on the email, or the owner that was cc’d on the email which is what has prompted me to leave the bad review. I am assuming the Customer Service Dept staff member and owner were cc’d when the designer finally responded to me because he was told to so they would know he did finally respond so I would stop “bothering them”. I can’t put into words how disappointed I am in the way I was treated by AES. I truly don’t think this behavior is typical from them based on the glowing reviews the company gets. It also appears they do beautiful work which is another reason I am disappointed. I still have no idea what the issue was but I had a horrible experience with them for whatever reason."

"We write this review as a sigh of relief now that our renovation project with River View is finally complete. The quality of the final work is excellent, and the construction crew, architect, and county inspector were all great to work with. The original crew we worked with, led by Edwin, were so hardworking, friendly, thorough, and fast. That's what really pushed us from 2 to 3 stars. However, the process getting here was frustrating and unnecessarily chaotic. Timeline & Communication Issues: Initial promise: We were clear that the renovation had to allow us to live in our home during construction and be completed before Christmas. Early communication: Our original project manager, Cris, was personable, and early communication seemed fine, if a bit informal and sometimes inappropriately personal. Major miscommunication: Near the holidays, we discovered that the plans submitted included cutting into the roof — something we explicitly said we didn’t want. This contradicted verbal assurances and caused major last-minute changes. Project Management Failures: Poor planning and oversight: Cris and the architect’s plan didn’t align with the construction work. We had to get involved directly with the county to fix errors. Paperwork errors: Incorrect submissions to the county added delays and confusion, which we had to monitor ourselves. Last-minute scramble: We were cleaning up dust on Christmas Eve due to these planning failures. Personnel Turnover & Lack of Handoff: Cris leaves the company: No proper handover to James, the new PM, who was unfamiliar with our project. Crew replaced: The original crew, who were great, were gone; new crew had no context or direction. James leaves: Another handoff with no context — the third PM had no idea about our project or its outstanding items. Escalation mishandled: When we raised our concerns with Kyle, the CEO, the response felt dismissive, with no accountability for the previous missteps. In summary, it's a beautiful end result... but we’re glad it’s over. The process left us frustrated, confused, and frankly, exhausted."

Over 12 years in business! All home improvement work, concrete, brick, decks, garage, bathrooms, kitchen, basements
"Project was a new deck, started last year 2024, should have been completed before the end of that summer, here it is Jun 2025 and still not complete, talk to owner several times said still no movement forward, board cracking all over the place due to screws not normal wood cracking, even thought the wood is cracking more and more day by day since the deck is not complete it has not been sealed. Boards do not line up, come home one day during the build to to 3’ wide steps, we ordered 5’ wide steps, no communication between the project manager and the builder. They walked in one day and said we are done except for the sanding and staining, we asked where the post lights were, they said we didn’t order them, I said check the contract, there response after checking was oh our bad, they did a makeshift attempt to add post lights and not the ones we wanted. Talked to the owner (Bill) several times, each time I have to re-explain the issues, each time he says he will come out and make it right, still no appointment and no visit. These guys claim to be a Vet Owned Business, they give it a bad name. I have given him 5 days to respond or we seek legal assistance/action. With they way this project has gone I don’t understand how they stayed in business or received any good reviews. I would give no stars if I could."

Yes, you should be able to cover your detached garage on your homeowners insurance policy. Most policies will automatically cover it as a “separate structure,” but policies differ widely. It’s best to confirm with your insurance company whether or not it will cover the detached garage before starting this extensive project.
It’s typically less expensive to buy a garage-building kit than to build a garage from scratch if you’re supplying all the labor. However, unless you are an experienced builder, you will still need to hire pros to install the foundation, concrete floor, and add electrical and plumbing to your garage kit. In that case, it’s worth the investment to build a garage through a local garage builder who can coordinate the hiring of other necessary pros.
The cost to convert a carport into a garage averages about $22,000, ranging from about $15,000 and $55,000. Additional cost factors to consider include size, time of year, and how much of the carport you can reuse. Other cost factors include the kinds and amounts of materials used, such as:
Add insulation: $1 per square foot
Add drywall: $1–$3 per square foot
Add window: $450–$2,000 per window
Add outlets: $75–$500
Add garage door: $250–$11,200
Enclose framing: $5–$13 per square foot
Replace roofing: $1,000–$2,000
The cost to build a detached garage for two cars costs about $26,400 on average. Prices range from $19,200 to $33,600, depending on your location, the garage size, height, materials, and site prep required. Additional cost factors include any plumbing, electrical wiring, and insulation. If you need to build a concrete foundation for a new detached garage, you can expect to pay $1,000 to $8,600 for this essential addition.
The average cost to remodel a garage is around $18,000, ranging from $1,500 to $50,000, depending on size, materials, location, and other factors like plumbing and electrical. Garage remodels that include changing the roof and walls add significant expenses to the project. Plus, you can expect to pay about $1,400 for the building conversion permits. For a simple remodel, like painting interior walls and recoating the garage floor, it will cost about $2 to $5 per square foot.
