"Dave from Calzini's Plumbing and Heating got me through a hard time when I couldn't get anyone else to provide service on short notice. As a landlord, I had to replace a hot water heater for my tenants as soon as possible. I had to shut the water off and they were extremely upset about it. The only one that responded and came out right away was Calzini's Plumbing. They arrived within an hour and were out within an hour after with everything functioning perfectly. It was in the evening so couldn't get a permit that night. Dave from Calzini's arrived early the next morning to have a permit pulled and all was good again. Some signs that your main sewer line is clogged are easy to spot, like when water backs up into your showers, sinks, and toilets for no apparent reason. However, some indicators are more subtle. The most common signs that you may have a clogged sewer main include:

  • Gurgling sounds coming from drains or toilet

  • Water in your basement drain or in the lawn

  • Smell of raw sewage throughout your home

  • Other found odors like rotten eggs around your home

First, find the cleanout pipe in your yard. Unscrew the cap—you may need a wrench to do so. Then, get a drain snake. You can use a non-motorized one, but a motorized snake will make the job a little easier. Feed the snake through the pipe until it reaches the clog. Spin the snake continuously, but don’t try to feed it through the pipe anymore. Keep spinning until you feel it break the clog apart.

Cat pee has a strong ammonia-like smell, so if you smell cat pee but don’t have a cat or don’t suspect your cat has any accidents, there could be other issues at hand. Aside from pet urine, your house may smell like cat pee from leaking freon from an old fridge, mold, spilled cleaning supplies, or even outside odors from nearby farms.

Bleach isn’t likely to help unclog a sewer line. Bleach isn’t useful in this situation because it won’t dissolve the grime and debris in the clog. Instead, you want to use ingredients that will have a chemical reaction to clear out the buildup, like vinegar or salt and baking soda.

It’s generally safe to stay in a house that smells like sewage, but you should get the problem fixed as soon as possible. In most cases, the level of sewer gas you’re exposed to in a home will be low enough to only cause minor symptoms, though high levels of gas exposure can be more dangerous. If you’re smelling sewer gas in your home, it’s important to locate, assess, and fix the problem, because it won’t go away on its own.
