"Jonathan team was fantastic! They completed our deck replacement project on time with no surprise costs and with great communication throughout the project. We were able to address multiple issues and smaller projects that had been languishing on our to-do list for years as part of the larger deck replacement, and we will absolutely keep Collazo in mind for future home repairs. 5/5!"

"I have now had 4 pickups from this company. Each time it has been with different items: I have had my kitchen remodeled,  a deck torn down and rebuilt, a new roof put on, old fencing disc arded, and a yard cleanup. The only difference in pricing was for the roofing and even though ti was more money it was STILL CHEAPER than a dumpster!!! I don't know how these guys do it, but they pickup on time, without issue andfor the cost quoted. I have turned each of my contractors onto them - now they are using them. SO MUCH cheaper and better service than any dumpster company I have used!"

"Everything went great, there were a couple changes that had to be made as the job progressed, we found out the old toilet had been leaking pretty badly, and there was a bunch of rotting floor boards.  Other than that they completed the job within our time frame, cleaned the house up at the end of each day very well, and really treated our home like it was theirs.  Everything was sealed up with plastic barriers so we wouldn't get dust throughout the house, I was very pleased about that.  We plan to have them back in the next year or two for the kitchen.

"I hired W. Hartnagel Construction to do multiple projects on my house. All projects were finsihed on time with good quality. The cost estimates were quite accurate without any surprises in the end. The costs were also very reasonable. The owner Wally has always been courteous, honest, and responsive. He was easy to reach by phone and emails. He stood behind the work done and always addressed the concerns that I had. My door vendor shipped a defective door. Wally and his contractor put the door in to block out the cold air and came back a second time to install the replacement without charging me twice. I definitely recommend W.Hartnagel."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Whether composite decking is better than wood depends on your priorities, especially regarding budget and maintenance. Composite decking offers superior longevity (30 to 50 years) and durability, and it is low-maintenance, requiring no sanding, staining, or sealing. In contrast, wood decks typically last 10 to 30 years and need refinishing every few years. While the upfront cost of composite is higher than wood, the reduced maintenance can lead to long-term savings. If a lower initial cost is the primary factor, wood is the more affordable choice.

Before installing a new railing, check the condition of the deck frame and joists, especially around the perimeter where posts attach. If boards are loose, soft, or show signs of rot, the structure may need repair. A deck pro can inspect your framing to confirm it meets load-bearing requirements.

Decks require several inspections during and after the building process, but the specifics vary depending on where you live. Most areas mandate that decks comply with local building codes and safety regulations for the foundation, framing, and structure. Some pros recommend a footing inspection, which verifies the depth, width, and location of the various footings to ensure they offer enough foundational support.

Typically, most residential wooden decks are designed to support approximately 40 pounds per square foot, including the deck’s weight and any items placed on it. While this is fine for typical use, it is usually not enough to hold the weight of a hot tub filled with water and people. To safely support a hot tub, your wood deck will likely require reinforcement. Therefore, it’s best to have a contractor or a structural engineer assess it before hot tub installation.

Local building codes don’t specify the number of steps a deck can have before a railing is required, mainly because stair height varies widely. Most areas require decks 30 inches or higher to have a railing. While not exact, that roughly equates to four to seven steps.
