"We needed a skylight installed in our bathroom, and MMP did an excellent job--we are very happy with it! The team was friendly and worked quickly and efficiently to get it done before it got dark, and the quality of their work was excellent. Matt was very friendly and nice to communicate with as well, and always responded right away. I highly recommend MMP Construction to anyone looking for great quality work and excellent customer service."

"Joe and his team at Silmac did a terrific job on a pretty complicated basement renovation. It's an old Boston house with a few old-house surprises lurking behind the walls and under floors. To be clear, none of these issues were Joe's team's fault--just our home's age. Each time we encountered something, Joe promptly let us know what he found, what would need to be done about it, and kept us in the loop. These unexpected issues aside, his team was professional and courteous. I think the thing that really stood out to us was Joe's availability and communication throughout the process. A project this big--it involved digging a few feet into the basement floor, pouring new concrete, etc--was new for us, but Joe generated a lot of trust, both with his knowledge and with his transparency and communication. And at the end of the project, our basement was transformed from a really rough basement into a place that our whole family enjoys spending time. So the process and the end product was really great. We don't have any immediate projects in mind, but when we do, we'll reach out to Joe at Silmac again."

"I needed the work complete in 10 days. Humbarto was punctual every step in the process. The work was done on time as discussed. He scrape the ceiling added a bonding compound. When dried he plaster and came back later to prime and paint. The ceilings were smooth and painted professionally. The kitchen wall looked great no more cracks. Humbarto answered all my calls and questions. He explained what he would do and he was here for the whole project. I would hire him again."

"Before speaking with Richard I wasn't getting very far. Contractors were not calling me back and the few that showed up didn't want to do the work. Richard broke down the entire process for me and explained specifically what I needed to do. Richard was such a great help that not long after I got a contractor to fix my roof and now we are in the process of fixing my front door and porch."

"As a testament to how happy we were with our first renovation provided by the Curtice Group in 2021, which provided completely new kitchen/dining/mudroom/bath, we hired Scott and his team again in 2024-25 for another major renovation. This job was composed of 3 main parts: a gut remodel of our main bathroom, renovation of a large attic space (about 700 sq ft), and whole-home conversion from steam radiators (gas) to heat pumps including removal of all radiators and a chimney. The bathroom now is attractive and more functional, the attic adds a large amount of useful space as an office/kid room/guest area, and central air makes a more comfortable climate. I’m a big fan of the design/build concept, because you really don’t want to separate those two elements into different contractors, and if you find a talented company, they can handle all aspects of the job fluidly. Scott Curtice has a real knack for design, he is attentive and cares about details, and he will perform carpentry and touch-up work as needed. Moreover, he handled all the project coordination so that we could do the jobs that we do well, which do not include home renovation."

"Everything went great.  From planning the room to finishing the project.  Antonio, his workers, and the sub-contractors were all friendly and respectful of my family and home.  We had a couple of hang ups due to weather and materials, but a good contractor knows how to deal with those type of issues.  No excuses were ever made and anything I wanted changed was never a problem.  Antonio always made himself available if I had any questions or concerns and never hesitated to explain anything.  I can't say enough good things about how the new room and half bath came out."

"We did a complete gut and rehab of our kitchen and back porch. It was a big job involving structural changes, electric work and all new plumbing in the house. The team was professional, polite, cleaned up after themselves, and communicated well what was going on. The quality of work was very nice, new woodwork trim to match existing windows and trim in the house, electric changes, there was so much to do. It turned out great, I am very happy with the results, and would hire them again."

"Eric's team rebuilt our entire three season room, which was not functional. It is now, thanks to Mike and Brian. It also looks very good! Mike works hard at getting things done, and teaches the younger crew very well. He is structured and trustworthy. He also was patient answering my questions (I always have too many..!). Brian pays great attention to detail! I was impressed by how good the tile work looks, and also how good the finishing of the decking to the landing looks like, which he did. They also had to partly redo the patio, and it looks better than before."

"In short, Rob was phenomenal. We had a pipe that was leaking for quite a while, and black mold and severe water damage in a wall between our bathroom/kitchen had resulted. The water damage also affected the basement ceiling. Yuck! Rob called me back within an hour of my original message to schedule a time to come by for a quote. When he came by for the quote, he stayed for a while to thoughtfully discuss the approach. He put together the quote in a timely manner, and performed the work as scheduled, communicating regularly. He put much thought and care into the work, ensuring it was of the absolute highest quality. He coordinated with many other service providers -- tile, plaster, wallpaper, painter, town inspectors -- and everything came together beautifully. I cannot recommend Rob highly enough and look forward to hiring him in the future! Thank you so much, Rob!"

Storm Shelters questions, answered by experts

Most cottage builds take between six months and one year from planning to completion. The timeline includes design, permitting, site prep, construction, and finishing work. Factors such as weather, material delays, and permitting can affect the schedule. Hiring an experienced cottage building contractor and making prompt decisions can help speed up the process.

Local zoning laws and building codes will determine whether you can build a guest house in your backyard. These laws may limit the potential location of the guest house on your lot or the size and look of the structure. If your lot isn’t large enough, you may not be able to build a guest house at all. Speaking with a local home addition company can help you learn about the local regulations and your other options, such as adding an ADU onto the main house.

The most accessible place to put a storm shelter is in a garage or basement, though you can work with a closet or patio if you have limited options. When you’re thinking about installing a storm shelter, reach out to a pro for some advice on placement. They’ll have a good idea of where on your property will be the best place for your shelter.

This is a matter of personal preference. However, building a detached structure is generally considered better if you intend to rent out the new space. The advantage to going with an attached garage addition is that you may pay less for plumbing, HVAC, and other features because you can use the existing systems from your home to carry over piping and wires.

Below-ground shelters are the best in terms of durability, but there is a risk of flooding and obstruction. Modern technology and rigorous construction requirements make above-ground shelters a better option for accessibility, safety, and, usually, your budget. They may not have the same aesthetic appeal, but many of their features make above-ground shelters a better option.
