"Customer service excellent;timely. Expedient in scheduling/completing deck project. Will consider using for future maintenance of deck. I was provided an estimated warranty for duration of staining and, of course, time will determine this. Would definitely consider contacting for future projects."

Customers say: Quality work

"I hired JGR Contractors to work on multiple projects I had around my home. They fixed my vinyl siding which was damaged during a storm. They leveled, re-enforced, and painted my oversize deck, replaced a broken drain pipe from my gutters, and replaced a rotted wooden kick plate under my slider. John was professional, courteous, honest, and upfront through the whole experience and his pricing is more than fair for the top quality work he provides. We will definitely use his services again in the future."

"Mark did an excellent job power washing and sealing our patio. We had a lot of moss growing in the cracks; he got rid of all of it, re-sanded in between the bricks and sealed it all up. It looks great. Fair price."

Small jobs welcome

"Aponte Contracting is EXCELLENT!! Excellent work. Reasonable price. Takes pride in his work. Doesn't keep you waiting, you call him, he comes the next day. Calls back if any changes to keep communication lines open. Arrives on time, in fact a little early. I like that! Very nice person to do business with. I was so happy with his service, that I called him back a few days later to do another job, I had him twice in one week with 2 different projects. I am satisfied with the results of both projects. My neighbor across the street saw the work Ponte Contracting did for me, and when I told my neighbor that I would recommend Ponte Contracting to anybody. My neighbor has projects that he's been working on for years- still uncompleted. My neighbor hired Ponte Contracting right on the spot. My neighbor is very happy to have found Ponte Contracting- like I am. If & when I need a contractor again, I will call Ponte Contracting."

"I used Durable Remodeling to replace an old deck. Dean and his crew were very professional and the deck came out great. After the deck was finished Dean gave me some advice on how to paint or stain it later on. He is such a pleasure to do business with. I would definitely hire Durable Remodeling again."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

The best direction for a gate to swing depends on its location and purpose, but swinging inward is the general rule. An inward swing is often considered safer, prevents the gate from opening into public spaces like a sidewalk, and may be required by local building codes.

There are exceptions and specific considerations. If your property is on a slope, an inward swing might not be possible. For a deck gate, it's safest to have it swing away from any steps. In a backyard, the direction can be a matter of preference, though an inward swing can be helpful when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

Regardless of direction, ensure the gate can open fully without hitting any objects or blocking spaces. While an inward swing is standard, a gate that can swing both in and out offers the most flexibility if your setup allows for it.

When installing deck boards, screws are generally a better option than nails. Screws offer superior holding strength over time, keeping the boards securely in place. In contrast, nails are more likely to pop out, which can create a tripping hazard. While you can use either, we recommend using 3-inch galvanized deck screws. To minimize the risk of cracking the wood, it's a good practice to drill small pilot holes before driving the screws into the deck joists.

Yes, deck pier blocks can be used as an alternative to traditional deck footings, especially for smaller or low-to-the-ground decks. Unlike poured concrete and buried post footings, deck blocks do not require digging or pouring. However, their use is dependent on local building codes. Some areas, particularly those prone to high winds, earthquakes, or hurricanes, may not permit the use of deck pier blocks. It is essential to consult your local building codes before choosing them for your deck project.

To maximize the utility of space under a deck, it’s important to keep this area dry and clean. One way to prevent the area from becoming too wet is to install an under-deck draining system. This affordable home upgrade channels water away from the deck and provides usable space for storage or a functional area below a second-story deck. Not only will this be a useful maintenance upgrade, it can boost your home’s property value.

Spindles on a deck may also be called balusters or pickets. While not as important to the structural support of the deck as the rail posts, they play a critical role in ensuring the deck is safe to use by closing in large gaps in the railing. For this reason, balusters must be no more than 4 inches away from one another.
