"Bob was great to work with. Very prompt in responding and getting information to me. I purchased shades to install on our skylights, but didn't have a tall enough ladder to reach. Bob came out, with the right equipment, installed the shades, made sure they worked, and cleaned up the area after he was done."

"Stella installed a new roof and skylights for us in November 2018. I had shopped around with various providers and I really appreciated the way Steve walked me through the process. They completed the whole job on a Saturday and even were able to work around receiving a skylight that was incorrectly sized by the manufacturer. Since then, I also hired Stella to replace the decking on my balcony (which took about a week), and also a couple small jobs like painting the outside of our three-story home, replacing some rotting baseboard, and installing new gutters. The baseboard job came up while we were doing a landscaping project, Milton from Stella came quickly on short notice to keep that project on schedule. Milton goes above and beyond -- I saw him stay late to fix something that I think the landscapers were supposed to do. The Stella team is friendly and always does a great job of cleaning up the job site. Steve has also been very clear on pricing and was also helpful in getting me the right receipts when our solar-powered skylight installation retroactively qualified for a tax credit after the laws were updated in 2020. We have recommended Stella to our neighbors who have also been happy with their work!"

"Anthony is a courteous and very professional. He came to measure the skylight glass and its replacement on time and date he provided, he also provided labor cost prior to doing the work. I did not know much about skylight glass replacement process so he explained me about cost of replacing the entire skylight vs. replacing the double pane glass only which is fabricated by local supplier. Majority of the cost involve was labor about 75%. He did a very through job and skylight did not leak after a rain next day. He also did other work around the house he was on the roof (1) increase the vent pipe length on roof and (2) replace four roof shingles on gambrel side of the roof. He is very friendly and easy to work with and very versatile. He has multiple talents beside working on skylights. His work quality is excellent -did not leave any debris on the ground or on driveway. I will not hesitate to hire for other jobs again around the house."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can replace a skylight without changing the entire roof—if the roof is in good shape. First, you need to make sure the roof around the skylight is intact and free of damage. Quality installation is crucial to prevent leaks, including replacing the flashing, which seals the skylight to the roof. While replacing the skylight alone is doable, it can make sense to replace both at once to streamline the work, coordinate the warranties, and reduce the risk of future leaks. If you’re unsure, reach out to a professional for help in deciding the best approach.

Skylights increase natural light, improve ventilation, and enhance aesthetic appeal in rooms.

Fixed skylights are by far the most popular type. Because skylights can be pretty high up on your ceiling, fixed (rather than operable) skylights remove some maintenance from the equation. Plus, you don’t have to constantly worry if you shut your skylight fully the last time you opened it or if you’re going to find a leak later on during a rainy day.

A skylight's ability to withstand hail depends on factors like material quality and thickness. Impact-resistant options, such as tempered or laminated glass, fare better against hail compared to standard glass. Proper installation and regular maintenance also contribute to their resilience. While smaller hailstones may not pose a significant threat, larger ones can cause damage. Consider skylight protection methods like covers or screens in hail-prone areas to enhance durability and minimize potential harm.

Yes, you can add blinds or shades to both roof windows and skylights, but roof windows tend to have more options available. Retractable skylight shades are popular on both options for added privacy, light control, and heat reduction, although they’re more expensive than manually-operated blinds or shades. If you have a roof window or skylight set in a high ceiling, a motorized or solar-powered skylight window covering is probably your best bet.
