They are super reliable very reasonably priced and always communicated very well ! At the moment theyâ re doing a desperately needed foundation upgrade on my older home I highly recommend them and am extremely happy with how all of my home projects have turned out."

"So here’s my experience with GMD Excavation. Quick response to the post. Gary came out to give us a quote. I a very large backyard. We decided to go with him because he had a better rate than the competition. He did a awesome job. I loved the fact that he left my back yard clean despite him having to dig and remove about 9 large tree stumps. I would most definitely recommend him and his company to anyone that needs excavation and grading done. Great job!!!! And thank you :)"

"Diego and his crew did a great job! This was a large 1,200 square foot patio area renovation that included a paver patio, pea gravel patio, grass (sod), cobblestones and a new privacy fence. I then hired him to mulch the property (20 yards). He came when he said he would, cleaned up and got the whole project done in a little over a week. Highly recommend!!"

"I had five yards of barks mulch spread by Jose and crew. They did an outstanding job spreading the mulch, extremely neat with no spillover, and it held up after heavy rains. Couldn't be happier. Two thumbs up??"

Excavating questions, answered by experts

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

Yes, you can install a trench drain if you already have concrete in your yard or garden. While it can complicate some aspects of the job and slightly run up the cost, it is doable. Residential trench drains can be easily retrofitted to outdoor areas with concrete without having to remove excessive amounts of your patio, pool area, or decorative walkways.

The digging depth will depend on the size of the trencher you use. Even smaller units can dig up to 4 feet deep, which is plenty for a DIY job. However, much larger trenchers can reach a depth of 18 feet and are better used by a team of pro contractors, not a single DIYer. As with all home improvement projects, use the right tool for the job and proceed with caution.

In most areas, you will need a permit for excavation work, even for projects that only involve grading or yard leveling. Permit requirements depend on your local government and the scope of the project, but they are especially common for significant digging or work that could affect utilities or public property. These permits help protect the local topography and prevent drainage issues. An experienced excavation company will typically know whether permits are needed and can often handle the process of pulling and closing them for you. You can also verify permit requirements by contacting your local building department and describing your project.

As a general rule, the protected area should be about 1½ times as wide as the canopy of the tree’s leaves. This digging measurement can vary by tree species and the age of the tree. Of course, that can be a lot of fencing for larger trees, which is why our first step is about making difficult decisions on which trees to save.
