No, you can’t inspect the roof yourself if you want to get your roof certified for your mortgage lender or insurance underwriter. You’ll need to get it inspected by a licensed professional. If you happen to be a licensed inspector, this means that commercial rules apply, and you’d need to get your Remote Pilot Certificate, just as you would if using the drone for another business purpose.

However, if you want to use a drone to simply check out the roof, it’s considered recreational use. You won’t need your Remote Pilot Certificate, but you’ll still need to register your drone with the FAA and follow FAA and any state guidelines during the flight.

The installation may have been done correctly. However, improperly installed gutter guards can easily damage your shingles. Also, cheap gutter guards rarely come with installation fixtures. In the worst cases, they simply ask you to nail the guards in, which would sabotage your roof’s water resistance and thus void the warranty. To be sure, always check with your home warranty provider before making any modifications.

Permit fees sometimes include the cost of a solar panel inspection, but it depends on local regulations. In some locations, the inspection process involves several site visits with a preinstallation, in-progress, and post-installation inspection. We’ve covered the latter. Most roof repairs require a permit, though you should always check with your local municipality to confirm whether one is necessary. Some small, immediate repairs may not require immediate permit approval, but larger emergency repairs likely will. If you do any roof repairs without a permit, you could be on the hook for penalty fines, stop-work orders, and legal problems.
