"Colin was just terrific--responsive, professional, cordial and efficient! His workmanship was top-notch, and the projects for which we hired him, including drywall and plaster repair and installation in several locations around our house, were completed on time and on budget. We'd give Colin and McCarthy Plastering more than five stars were that possible and hire him again without hesitation."

"George is an exceptional craftsman and plasterer. I am so glad we found him on home advisor and decided to hire him for this project. We needed our kitchen ceiling repaired after a leak from upstairs. We were concerned about making sure the texture matched the existing texture on our ceiling. George matched it perfectly. He was punctual, very professional, and took the time to properly prepare the area so that dust and plastering were contained to the work area. He removed kitchen/food prep items and dog dishes from the area so that they would not get too dusty. He cleaned up nicely and was friendly. Even after he was done, he made sure there was not any extra dust or plaster anywhere in the house. The ceiling looks great. It is like the leak never happened.! Thank you, George, for an outstanding job. It was a pleasure doing business with you. We will be sure to recommend you to friends and family looking for a plasterer."

"Bertie came out to look at the gate on a Wednesday night. He pointed out that he could also replace some wooden pickets on the fence which I needed to have done but didn't think about asking him as getting the gate repaired was more important. He came out on Friday morning and repaired the gate and replaced pickets as well as secure a section of fencing. He did a great job. Bertie was very polite and punctual. He kept in contact with me the entire time. I would definitely hire Bertie again and I highly recommend him."

"Pedro was great and very professional. He was prompt and came at the agreed upon time and completed the job efficiently. I had a hole behind my stove that needed patching and Pedro went above and beyond and fixed the sidewall as well. Definitely would recommend."

"We can't express how thrilled we are with the remodel of our den/bathroom. Eric and Tom took great care in making the outdated room a beautiful space that we look forward to using. Their work ethic is outstanding. The job was done quickly and with care, and their pricing was excellent. We'll be using them again in the future. This is a "go-to" company! A+++"

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

Drying alone can take 1 to 4 hours to dry to the touch per plaster layer, but some types of plaster take several hours longer to dry. However, this doesn’t mean the job is done because plaster doesn’t fully harden until it cures, which can take a few days to a couple of weeks. It may take even longer if you’re building a new, pretty thick plaster wall. Allow the plaster to cure before painting it.

Plaster is a pretty tough surface, but it can still sustain damage from things like bumping against it, water issues, dampness, extreme humidity changes, and plain old age. Most plaster walls last hundreds of years and will only be taken down to the base layer when major repairs are required. Being cautious around the wall, not placing furniture against it, and ensuring stable humidity are all great ways to reduce possible damage.

Smaller is better when patching holes with spackle. Any holes wider than four to six inches in diameter tend to be too wide to repair with spackle alone. You'll likely want to patch bigger holes with a drywall panel.

Even holes measuring up to 6 inches may be challenging to fill with spackle alone. For best results, purchase a wall repair patch made from wire mesh. Cut the patch to fit over the hole, then use the spackle to hold it in place. Apply the spackle over the patch as you would for a smaller hole.

Installing or repairing plaster on ceilings differs slightly from performing the same motions on a wall. You’ll apply slightly less plaster to lower the overall weight of the ceiling. Wall texturing is common, whereas most ceilings are smooth plaster. Tough coat plaster is strong, meaning you can use less while retaining a solid surface.

It’s not a good idea to plaster over broken plaster (unless by broken you’re referring to cracked, in which case that’s perfectly fine). However, broken plaster can be a sign of a larger underlying issue like foundation damage or severe damage to the lath holding up the plaster, so it’s worth investigating before you simply plaster on top of the damage.
