For a large tree, roots can take 5 to 10 years to completely decay after a stump dies. But that’s rarely a concern for above-ground plants and growth. You can choose to grind up a stump immediately after felling a tree (although it will be tougher wood), or you can wait several months up to a year for the stump to decay. Generally, a shovel, mattock or pickax, chainsaw, garden shears, and a wheelbarrow will help, but do your research once you choose your DIY strategy. You should also be sure to add safety supplies like goggles, ear protection, gloves, and more to your list, no matter which method you choose.

You can expect Epsom salt and vinegar to take between 6 to 12 months to kill and dry out a tree. That may sound like a long time, but it’s much faster than it takes most tree stumps to die.
