"I wish I could give Cotton Tree Service more than five stars. They have removed 5 trees from our property on two separate occasions. Four were over 30 feet tall. All the trees were removed carefully and professionally with heavy equipment and yet our lawn was not damaged. The hard working crew was very polite, professional and knowledgeable. The owner Tom was on site to operate the large crane and his skill was amazing to watch. There will be more tree removal in our future and Cotton Tree Service will be the only one we will call. It is possible to cut down a tree on your property yourself, but we don’t recommend it. If the tree is short enough to easily reach the top branches, and the tree is far from power lines or structures, consider renting a chainsaw and removing it yourself. These methods allow you to kill a stump using minimal machinery and physical exertion.

The speed of your tree root removal process depends on a few different factors, including the size and type of tree. However, the fastest method of killing tree roots is applying chemical herbicide, which starts working quickly and efficiently. But this removal method has its drawbacks, such as having a negative effect on the surrounding vegetation and landscaping. Other options like rock salt and stump grinding work relatively quickly and cause less damage to your yard.

Once you confirm a tree is dead, you should remove it. Dead trees eventually fall, and larger trees in particular can cause damage to rooftops, fencing, flowers, and other objects. As we mentioned, letting decayed wood stay in your yard also invites risks to the surrounding landscaping and vegetation.

You don’t always need a permit to grind a stump, but you might need one depending on your location and the stump’s surroundings. Permits are often needed if the stump is part of a protected tree species, near public areas or utility lines, or close to environmentally sensitive zones like wetlands. Some cities also regulate noise and work hours. Always check local rules before grinding, and contact your city or county office if you're unsure.
