"After Lowe's came to clean the dyer vents at my condo building, my dryer was no longer venting. I contacted them and initially they said they would send someone to check the vent. They then called back and said my vent was never clean because it was disconnected and they could not help me. This was strange because the dryer was working fine before they came. Also, in my trash there was foil tape that you would wrap around the vent. This made me think that they did try to clean the vent despite saying they did nothing. I contacted my management company who said there were never any previous issues with my vent. I called Lowe's back and told them this and they still insisted that they never touched it but would check with the technician. I looked into it my self and found that in the section of the vent between the dryer and the ceiling there was a mass of lint the size of a small animal (see the picture). It was so large that moisture from the dryer had also built up and flooded the bottom of the vent hose. The building manager was then able to clear another mass of lint from the section of the vent in the ceiling and the dryer then started venting to the outside. It was never disconnected like Lowe's said. It seems they started cleaning it and just jammed the dust all the way back to the dryer. Why they didn't finish removing it is a mystery. If they ever service my building again, I will refuse."

If you have dirty vent covers, clogged air filters, noisy air ducts, or weak airflow, it might be time to get your air ducts cleaned. You should also call an HVAC professional if you notice any visible mold or believe that there are rodents or insects in your ductwork. Abnormally high energy bills can also be a sign of dirty ducts.

Healthy air change per hour, or ACH, rates vary by room, usage, average occupancy, and volume. The minimum ACH that's considered healthy averaged throughout the home is 0.35. However, in rooms where humidity is an issue, such as bathrooms and kitchens, healthy ACH levels are between eight and 15.

You’ll want to spot-clean your air vents once every month. Spot-clean them by using a handheld vacuum, a brush attachment, or a microfiber cloth dipped in warm, soapy water. Make sure you trace over the corners and crevices, which trap dust. Once or twice a year, you should also deep clean. You can remove the vents and soak them in warm, soapy water for a half hour before cleaning, drying, and returning them.

Luckily, you can typically eliminate your microwave’s burnt smell within a few hours for most situations. Be sure to let it air out for two to three hours after cleaning to let the odor evacuate your home—if you close your home up too early, the odor will be trapped. For stronger, more stubborn burnt smells, it might take a full day or more to really notice a difference.
